Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Every customer is unique in thier own special way. Listen to their ideas, needs and their goals. Find the most economical route to take without compromising the integrity or curb appeal of the project. Organize a start and a completion date. To eliminate any problems, a written quote is always part of every job.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
For the tree work. I took night classes @ SP jrC. to obtain my Arborist certificate training. It consisted of learning all of the tree components and how/why they work the way they do. How to and not to cut a tree. Where to and not to cut a tree. How to maintain a healthy tree. How to bring a tree in very poor health back to health. I love the tree work more than I have any other profession. Roofing:. The old fashion on the job training. That's where you can see how and be apart of the different installation procedure. Finding and sealing roof leaks is the strongest part of our company. Roofing in Houston, where it rains 20inches a month, you get well educated in every imaginable scenerio. Our repair record is just under 100% for getting it right the first time.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Landscaping type services. $40.00 per hr. per man.
Tree work, I like to look at first. there are alot of varibles. Hight, overhead wires, surrounding buildings etc. Followed by a written proposal.
Roofing, I take the same approach I do on the trees, I had a commercial roofing co. in Houston for 23 yrs. I enjoyed it, but needed a change after my wife lost her life 8 yrs ago.The tree business is somewhat dangerous. I am very greatful that everyday, we have looked after each other. We take our time watch our step and come home safe every night.
How did you get started in this business?
Good question...After a night of 70 MPH, I had two trees blew partially down, called "leaners". I came up with a way to bring them down (which was completely the least safest way. I didnt know about tree trunck tention and how to "pick the spot" you want your tree to fall. But nevertheless, I just fell in love with it. and started finding jobs here and there. Today I am proud of our safety record. My men, their attitudes, their wives. We have all stood together for six years now. The more I learn, the more I see I have alot to learn still.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have had just about every kind you can think of...to esentric rodeo clowns, to engineers of loco-motives, pilots, veterans. law officers, senior citizens, bikers. You name it just about. I have had some kind of unique connection with 85% of them.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Two months ago we were removing a tree off of a roof. The wind was blowing and the odds were staccked against us. We devised a rope and rigging technique that lifted and pulled the tree up enough so we could get the roof water-tight to beat the oncoming rain. We got it water-tight, removed the 2 ton tree off of the house safely on the ground...and the rain came down hard, with no more water inside the customers' home. That was a great day.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
If it is in a area that needed permitted. If their are special needs for highline wires that were hot ot not. To make arrangements to put their animals in a shelter until the job was complete. Somewhere along those lines.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
What kind of history they have in that feild. What kind of employees does the contractor hires. How long has he been in business. what kind of equipment does he have. Is he insurable.
