Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Water Damage Inspection questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does a water damage inspection cost?

The cost of a water damage inspection can vary depending on the location, extent of the damage, type of property, and the professional you hire to perform the service. On average, a mold inspection costs $350 to $600 if you suspect water damage in your home.

Most water damage restoration companies include a free inspection if you contract with them for cleanup services. Before contracting with a water damage restoration company, ask if the company will work with your insurance company to simplify the process.

Who do you hire to inspect and estimate water damage?

There are several professionals you can hire to inspect and estimate water damage, including:

  • Water damage restoration companies
  • Home inspectors
  • Plumbers
  • Insurance adjusters
  • Mold remediation specialists

Be sure to check their credentials, certifications, and reviews. Also, asl for a detailed written estimate before any work begins.

How do you assess water damage?

The best way to assess water damage is to hire a professional that is experienced in water damage inspection. They have specialized equipment such as moisture meters and infrared thermal cameras to detect hidden pockets of saturation in the walls or floorboards.

Inspectors categorize the water damage into one of 3 categories:

  • Category 1 is clean water that poses no health risk. This water is from a clean source, such as a broken water supply line or a roof leak of rain water.
  • Category 2 is gray water which poses a mild health risk. This water is from dishwashers and washing machines.
  • Category 3 is black water which poses a significant health risk. This water is highly contaminated with bacteria and other pathogens from sewage backups or water from flooding.rainwater

How can you inspect for water damage behind walls?

Inspecting water damage behind walls is challenging for a homeowner, as the damage is often hidden from view. There are a few things you can do to look for signs of water damage, including:

  • Look for stains, discoloration, peeling paint, or bubbling wallpaper.
  • Feel for dampness or softness in the wall by pressing the wall in different places for soft or spongy spots.
  • Listen for strange noises coming from the wall such as dripping water or creaking sounds.

The safest way to find water damage behind walls is to hire a professional who has the necessary experience and equipment.

  • Are you licensed, insured, and certified to handle water damage restoration?
  • Can you provide references from satisfied customers or online reviews?

  • How do you handle mold remediation?
  • How long do you estimate the restoration process to take?
  • Do you work directly with my insurance company to simplify the process?
  • What guarantees or warranties do you offer for your services?
