Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Water Damage Cleanup and Restoration questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

What is water damage restoration?

Water damage restoration fixes the damage caused by water intrusion into your home. Leaks, burst pipes, floods, and hurricanes can cause water damage. Water damage restoration involves several key steps:

  1. Assessment
  2. Water extraction
  3. Thermal inspection
  4. Drying and dehumidification
  5. Cleaning and sanitizing
  6. Repairs

How much does water damage restoration cost?

Water damage restoration costs as little as $150 to as much as $100,000 depending on the volume of water and the extent of the damage. Most homeowners spend around $2,000 to $6,000 for water damage restoration.

Water mitigation costs are lowest to clean up minor leaks of clean, uncontaminated water. Costs are higher to clean up major leaks or contaminated black water. A professional will estimate the costs based on the water damage class, with Class 1 being the easiest and cheapest to fix. Class 4 damage is the most severe and costly to repair.

What are the benefits of professional water damage restoration?

Professional water damage restoration offers several benefits compared to handling the situation on your own. Most importantly, trained professionals have the knowledge and experience to assess the extent of the water damage accurately, extract water safely, and identify hidden moisture areas that need further treatment.

Other benefits of hiring professional help for water damage restoration include a faster response to minimize the damage, with most companies providing 24/7 emergency services. They also use advanced equipment like moisture detection tools and high-powered extractors and air movers to get faster results that prevent mold growth.

How is the cost of water damage restoration estimated?

Contractors estimate the price of water damage restoration by considering both the water damage class and category. The severity of water damage is categorized into four levels, with level 1 indicating minimal damage that is easy to address, and level 4 representing the most extensive and costly damage.

In addition, the estimation is influenced by the water category. Category 1 clean water poses no health risk making it the least expensive to clean up. Conversely, categories 2 and 3 pose greater health risks, demanding specialized attention and incurring additional costs.

Finally, other factors such as your location, the necessary repairs, and how fast you began remediation can contribute to the overall cost estimate.

How long does water damage restoration take?

Specialists can efficiently address minor, localized instances of water damage caused by clear or gray water within a few days. However, when dealing with extensive water damage resulting from natural disasters or contamination by black water, the restoration process may extend over several weeks or even months.

The restoration timeline is also contingent upon the availability and demand for contractors. In instances of natural disasters, the area will be inundated with others seeking professional water damage restoration.

Can water-damaged pictures be restored?

Restoring water-damaged pictures is possible in some cases, depending on the extent of the damage and the type of photograph. Here are some general steps that can be taken to save your precious photos:

  • Air-drying – If the water damage is minimal, you can try air-drying the photographs by laying them out on a clean, flat surface. Make sure to separate each photo to prevent them from sticking together as they dry.
  • Freeze-drying – For more severe damage, especially if the photos are stuck together, consider freeze-drying. This process involves freezing the photographs and then slowly drying them. It's a delicate process and is often best performed by professionals.
  • Professional Restoration Services – There are companies that specialize in photo restoration. These professionals have the expertise and equipment to carefully handle water-damaged photos using techniques such as scanning, digital restoration, and other methods to salvage as much of the image as possible.
  • Digital Restoration – In some cases, if the physical photograph cannot be fully restored, a digital copy of the image can be created using software to repair and enhance damaged photos.

What questions should I ask a water damage restoration contractor?

Ask these important questions when choosing a water damage restoration specialist:

  • What experience do you have treating homes with water damage like mine?
  • Are you licensed, insured, and certified in water damage restoration?
  • Can you provide references or customer reviews from recent clients?
  • Do you offer 24/7 emergency services, and at what extra cost?
  • What water damage assessment standards do you follow?
  • What equipment and process do you use for water extraction and drying?
  • Do you handle mold remediation?
  • What is the estimated timeline for the water damage restoration?
  • Will you work directly with my insurance company?
  • What guarantees or warranties do you offer on your work?

How do I choose a water restoration company?

Here are some suggestions on how to find a water damage restoration contractor:

  • Identify companies in your area with the best reviews on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Contact several companies to request estimates, giving them as much detail as possible, including the cause of the damage and the areas affected.
  • Insist on an on-site assessment to evaluate the damage with accuracy.
  • Ask questions during the assessment to understand what services they include, the timeline for completion, and any guarantees or warranties offered.
  • Request a written estimate that details the scope of work, material and labor costs, and other relevant expenses.
  • Compare estimates from several companies, considering the total cost, the services offered, the timeline, and the company's reputation.
  • Coordinate the restoration with your insurance provider. Ask if the restoration company can work directly with your insurance companies to simplify the process.
  • Check the credentials of the companies you are considering. Ensure their license, insurance, and certifications are in order.
  • Ask for references from previous clients and follow up to ask about the quality of their work.
  • Remember that low estimates may not represent the best value if they compromise on quality.
