What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Communicate. Spend the time getting to know them, the individual as a person and listen. Listening to a person express their ideas and open up about their experiences in certain instances really shines a light on the way they need to be helped and treated through the entire construction process, as well as the specific design features and aesthethic outcome they desire. Maybe they really don't need a service you offer but could use the help in identifying the area that needs attention. Our job is to help people and that starts with talking and communication.
How did you get started in this business?
As a kid helping my father and uncle when I could, which became more and more often as I learned more and really paid attention to how and why things should be done a certain way. Soaked up as much knowledge as possible and took a construction trades course in high school where I was class president. After graduation I spent years working in the field and problem solving difficult jobs that needed to have a solution, which really trained me on how to think outside the box and take an approach that ruled nothing out and allowed me to be creative and ways to apply things I was continuously learning all the time. Nothing is more rewarding than being the only person to solve a big problem when so many others couldn't, and now that persons home is fixed finally. Spent the better part of 15 years as management, from hands on lead positions and foreman spots to full Construction Management where I ran the entire site and in charge of all construction trades and procedures, schedules, and permitting/inspections for multiple houses in production at a time.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Every type of customer imaginable, with every possible need that had to be met or want that wasn't an option but a requirement. This is their home, and they've worked hard to acquire, build, maintain, and improve it, and they're idea of how they want their home is never wrong, never not doable, and never a burden. Difficult, possibly. Unrealistic, maybe. Unachievable, hell no. There's usually always a way to achieve a specific desire or result. It may not always be exactly as its imagined, but anything is possible.
