Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First we begin by understanding the project and client needs. We discuss ideas and possible team members for each project. We visit the site if necessary; followed by preparing a proposal for authorization. Each proposal is broken into different steps. These include concepts, further design development and/or construction documents. Each stage is discussed with the client so they are thoroughly informed and involved as to the direction the project is going. Finally, we provide construction oversight while the chosen contractor builds the project to ensure the client's goals and design is followed. Our goal is to build a long-term relationship with our clients and see that their ideas/dreams become a reality that fits their budget.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Edwards designStudio has have 20 years of site planning, landscape architecture and construction administration experience.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
My advice is to understand the differences between a landscape architect and landscape contractor (or other designers). Landscape Architects bring expertist and knowledge to a project. They create vision by looking at the "big" picture while working with the client. In turn, a landscape architect creates a plan that represents the owner's goals and works to see that plan implemented by the landscape contractor correctly so it respects the outlined project goals. As a landscape architect, we consider the needs of the client, spatial relationships, environmental impacts, views and many other factors relating to making a project successful and within budget.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Is the person concerned about my goals or just completing the project?
I am dealing with a professional? Are they licensed and reputable?
Is the company going to sell me something just because I think it is what I want or are they going to consider and make suggestions on how to make my idea better?
Will there be add-on's later in the project because a design was not followed?
Who will make sure things are built correctly?
