Sandra T. says, " Randy is very knowledgeable about all things landscaping and flower bed design. He spent hours drafting a design for my front yard that is absolutely gorgeous. He takes time to explain the pros and cons of using some plants and avoiding others. There were a couple of hiccups but he accommodated without increasing his estimate. It's important to set schedule expectations to allow for project discussions along the way. It's been about a month and my plants are thriving. Great work." Read more

Debie N. says, "Jesus took time to make sure I understood the bid, process and pricing. I can’t express enough my delight the minute the lights, wreath and swags were done. The lights brought a huge smile to all of us! Especially me! Jesus went above and beyond all expectations. Our home looks fabulous. Our neighbors including the little kids love the lighting almost as much as we do. One of our neighbors was so impressed with his service that they hired him and asked him to light up their tree. It looks fantastic! Really added to their home and our cup de sac. They will be using him next year, for sure.. He also helped my next door neighbor put up a wreath at no charge and she said they’re going to be calling him for next year to put up their lights. Jesus made quite an impression with all of us. Super professional, patient, kind, thoughtful and talented. His wife makes fantastic door garlands, wreaths and swags. Original, handmade custom work. She is a sweetheart (as are their super talented kids). I highly recommend Jahaleel Lighting. Enjoying our lights every single evening. People drive by real slowly to look. The icing on the cake was the multicolored bulbs on top of chimney in front and the one in the back that I didn’t even know was there! He made sure the curb appeal popped! He did not disappoint." Tom S. says, "We replaced our 30-year-old concrete driveway with a stamped concrete design installed by Aesthetic. Additionally, we asked that a very custom-styled fence be guilt. I had a quote from a nationally recognized concrete driveway installer whose contract included a clause that their bid did not include the price of 'unexpected costs'. I did not tell Rigo of the original bid, and his bid was $3,500 dollars LESS then the other company. This meant, that I could do the driveway, and build the customized fence for the same price that the other company would have charged for just the driveway. Additionally, Rigo's experience in the Houston market allowed him to be confident that there would be no unexpected charges that would be passed down to us. The other company explained that because they were in so many markets in the U.S. they could not possibly know what to expect when they started a project! In other words, they didn't have enough experience in the Houston market, and didn't seem capable enough to do their due diligence so that they could guarantee a price. Our project was delayed because of rain. I was concerned that with the skyrocketing prices of concrete and other materials, the original price of our project might escalate. Rigo's relationship with his suppliers guaranteed him a locked-in price, and the project went forward under the original terms and pricing. This was a hugely messy project, that caused me great concern. However, the crew from Aesthetic Landscape made it immediately apparent that they knew what they were doing. These weren't just 'day laborer's picked up from a parking lot - these guys knew what to do, and how to do it! As with most of the projects associated with our Kelliwood home, when it was done, I wished I had done it sooner. The driveway is beautiful, and the fence is extraordinary. Neighbors are coming from blocks away to see what we've done. People we've never talked to before, are passing by and complimenting the design and the quality of the installations! Truthfully, I was skeptical when Rigo stated: "We do it all!". Most people who can do it all, can't do it all very well. Aesthetic Landscape 'does it all', and does it all very well! Many thanks!" Your Retaining Wall Contractors questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

What is a retaining wall?

A retaining wall is a structure designed to hold back soil and prevent erosion, particularly in sloped areas. Commonly made from materials like concrete, stone, or wood, these walls are essential in landscaping and construction. They come in various types, including gravity walls, which rely on their weight, and reinforced walls, which use additional support for stability.

The main purpose of a retaining wall is to create flat surfaces for building or landscaping while managing water drainage. Proper design is crucial to withstand the lateral pressure from the soil behind it. When built correctly, retaining walls stabilize landscapes and enhance property aesthetics.

How much does a retaining wall cost?

Building a retaining wall costs between $20 and $50 per square foot, on average, but some materials can cost a bit less, especially when building a straightforward, simple design. Complex designs and premium materials can increase costs dramatically such as steel or metal walls that can reach $150 per square foot.

Some inexpensive retaining wall ideas include using wood which costs $10 to $40 per square foot installed. Wood gives you a warm, rustic appearance that looks great in a garden area. Gabion is another affordable material. The wire mesh cages are filled with stones to create a unique and eye-catching wall that is also affordable, costing about the same as wood but will have better durability.

Where can I put a retaining wall?

You can place a retaining wall in several locations, especially where there are slopes or uneven ground. Common spots include residential yards to create flat areas for gardens, patios, or walkways. They are also useful along driveways to hold back soil and prevent erosion. In commercial areas, retaining walls can stabilize slopes around parking lots or roads.

When choosing a location, make sure the wall is set back from the slope to allow for proper drainage. For walls taller than 4 feet or in weak soil, it's best to consult a professional to ensure safety and effectiveness. Proper planning helps the wall last longer and work better.

What is the best type of retaining wall?

The best type of retaining wall depends on your needs and the site conditions. For small to medium projects, gravity walls are a great choice. They are heavy and hold back soil effectively and can be made from stone or concrete blocks. For taller walls or areas with more soil pressure, cantilever walls are strong and flexible, often made from reinforced concrete.

If space is tight or the soil is weak, sheet pile walls made from interlocking steel sheets work well. They are good for soft soil and are often used for shorelines. For a natural look, stone block walls are durable but can be harder to install. The right choice will depend on your budget and what you want the wall to look like.

How do I choose a retaining wall contractor?

Some tips to help you find a reliable and skilled contractor include:

  • Check experience: Look for contractors with a proven track record in building retaining walls to ensure quality workmanship.
  • Verify licensing and insurance: Ensure the contractor is properly licensed and insured to protect yourself from potential liabilities.
  • Read reviews and references: Check online reviews on HomeGuide and Google and ask for references to gauge the contractor's reputation and customer satisfaction.
  • Understand costs: Get a detailed estimate that outlines all costs to avoid hidden fees or misunderstandings.
  • Evaluate technical knowledge: Choose a contractor who understands soil types, drainage solutions, and the materials best suited for your project.
  • Look for guarantees: A reliable contractor should offer warranties or guarantees for their work, providing peace of mind.
  • Find local contractors: Hiring a local contractor can lead to better communication and quicker access to materials.

What questions should I ask a retaining wall contractor?

When hiring a retaining wall contractor, ask these questions to ensure you choose a qualified professional:

  • How long have you been building retaining walls?
  • Can you provide references?
  • Are you a certified installer?
  • What is the projected budget?
  • Do you hire subcontractors?
  • Can you show examples of your previous work?
  • What materials do you recommend?
  • What is the timeline for completion?
