Bridget S. says, "Northscapes Inc. did a fantastic job. The communication through the app was great. We needed shrubs pulled and the ground leveled and grass. He helped me make a good choice (sod turf over grass seed-it’s mid July afterall). The two men were respectful of the narrow street and cleaned up fantastically when they were done (swept my walkway even). We are very pleased with the work and the price. Added 2 before and 2 after pictures. " Read more

Daniel H. says, "I was really skeptical when I first hired HomeStar masonry and construction corp , not because I thought they couldn't help address the several foundation cracks/leaks, but because since I had multiple foundation cracks (the home was owner built and they weren't necessarily experts), some obviously previously repaired (or "attempted" repairs), and I didn't think they could really do them all... and they did. It's amazing! I've had to keep a dehumidifier running for the this years to address the leaks and the periodic mild puddling... and last weekend, even with the recent thaws, the basement was bone dry... in the late winter/early spring... for the first time in nine years. I wish I had hired them sooner!" Read more

What do masonry contractors do?

Masonry contractors work with materials like brick, stone, cinder blocks, and poured concrete to construct and repair structures. Masonry work includes building and repairing block and retaining walls, chimneys, fireplaces, patios, walkways, siding or brick walls, and landscape curbing.

Common masonry repairs include fixing cracks, replacing bricks or blocks, replacing mortar, tuckpointing or repointing, and restoring water-damaged stone and brick.

What are the different types of brick and stone masons?

  • Concrete masonry contractors – Concrete masons work with cinder blocks and poured concrete to install and repair driveways, block walls, retaining walls, sidewalks, columns, and walls.
  • Stonemasons – Stonemasons work with natural and manufactured stones in projects such as a stone patio, stone steps, stone siding, and stone veneer walls.
  • Brick masons – Brick masons or bricklayers work on brick projects such as tuckpointing, chimneys, fireplaces, columns, walls, and patios.

How to find local masonry contractors?

Start by searching our list of residential masonry companies, then compare reviews and costs. Next:

  • Get at least three estimates to compare. Most brick masons require an onsite visit to provide an accurate estimate.
  • Ask for recommendations from family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Select companies that are licensed, insured, and certified.
  • Verify their insurance, worker’s compensation, and bond guarantees.
  • Browse reviews and check out their previous work on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Look for masons certified by the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA), the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), or other masonry organizations.
  • Choose a mason who is a member of a local or national masonry union. Union members are required to undergo extensive training.
  • Ask about their warranties and guarantees.
  • Get a detailed estimate, contract, and warranty in writing before the work begins.
  • Make sure the quote includes debris cleanup and removal.
  • Never pay in full upfront. Follow a payment schedule at job milestones.

After asking questions and verifying their credentials, hire the best brick and stone work companies in your area.

What questions to ask brick masons and stonemasons?

When hiring brick and stone masonry contractors, ask them the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
  • Are you certified by the Masonry Contractors Association of America?
  • Can I see photos of your past projects?
  • Do you offer free estimates?
  • How much will my project cost?
  • Will you pull the required building permits and be here for site inspections?
  • Will you give me a copy of the contract before work begins?
  • Do I need to power wash or prepare the brick before the project starts?
  • Which mortar type will you use, and will it match the color of the existing mortar?
  • Does the estimate include debris cleanup and removal?
  • What additional costs should I expect?
  • How do you handle damages that happen on the job?
  • Are there any potential complications you foresee?
  • What does your warranty policy include?
  • What's your payment schedule, and what payment options do you accept?
  • What do I need to provide to get started?
  • How long will the project take?

They did a fantastic job on my property, and I told them I want them to come back in the fall for a couple of jobs as well as the spring. I have a lot of work to be done here, but I can't do it all right now. I would highly recommend this company.

Based on our experience, we highly recommend HomeStar masonry and construction corp . Their professionalism and expertise were evident from the time of our initial contact all the way through to the completion of the job. John responded very quickly when we contacted him with our concern about some foundation cracks, and he came to our home in a very timely manner to evaluate the issue. He thoroughly explained the type of repairs he recommended, and he provided a very reasonable estimate for the work. The gentleman who performed the job was professional, friendly, and completed the job to perfection. We are fortunate to have such a reliable foundation repair service in our community.

We contracted Mr. Turnbull for around 60 feet of fencing, after struggling to find other contractors at an affordable rate. Mr. Turnbull was able to come survey the site just a day after I asked him, and gave us a quote then and there. This was on a Friday, and on Monday he and his crew showed up and finished the fence, all before noon! To say we were pleased with his professionalism, quality, and speed is an understatement. We were so impressed that we contracted him again for a further 50 feet of fencing. I can't overstate how nice it was to have these jobs done in an *extremely* timely manner, with excellent quality to boot! Absolutely would recommend OT Construction, and we might be contracted him again in the future!
