Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I travel to the customer to see the problem first hand, then if possible, I repair the unit there. If it's not possible to perform the repair on site I take the PC to my shop and repair it there. Upon completion I deviler it back to the customer.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
No formal education. I have been working on, building and repairing PC's since the mid 1980's. I was a network administrator for 5 years before opening WindowsWiz.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
If the unit is not performing correctly when I'm done there is NO CHARGE. My house call prices are $75 for home users and $125 for business users. Plus cost of parts if necessary.
How did you get started in this business?
I was working at a printing company and they needed someone to setup a computerized typesetting system. I learned everything I know the hard way, by trial and error. After researching systems and getting the computers set up I was promoted to Network Admin and continued to work with computers. I also began working with home users in the evening and on weekends to suppliment my income. In September 2000 I quit my job and began working full time on WindowsWiz.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Many home users, small offices and home businesses.
Describe a recent project you are fond of.
I frequently have been able to recover photos and other personal files from dead hard drives. I always love to let the customer know I was able to save their data.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Find someone you can trust.
Find someone who will fix the cause of the problem not just reinstall and hope the problem doesn't reappear later.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Exactly what were you doing when the problem first appeared? What program were you running etc.
Is the repair person going to care if you get your files and programs back or just reinstall the operating system?
