Fleo B. says, "Jeevan of JBS Systems was a professional in every sense. He did not over promise to obtain my business. He said he would try to have the work done today. He had the work done today. I called six other repair techs in the area. Jeevan’ s hourly rate beat all the rest and I am very comfortable he did not protract his work ton”run the meter”. I was very impressed that he was not at all ostentatious and speak in computer argot. He answered my questions and misunderstandings directly. I purchased replacement parts to ensure there was no additional markup. To my amazement, after a quick diagnosis, Jeevan returned all the parts to me for store refunds. My computer already had an SSD primary drive! I shall definitely return to JBS for my computer needs and refer friends and relatives to him as well. Five stars!" Read more

Your computer repair questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does computer repair cost?

Computer repair costs about $65 per hour or $50 to $150 total, depending on what the problem is. The most common repairs are as follows:

  • Complete tune up & PC repair: $150
  • Diagnostic testing: $40
  • Laptop hardware repair: $30
  • PC hardware repair: $20
  • Software installation: $10
  • Laptop rental: $50
  • Mobile phone repair: $35
  • Data recovery: $100+
  • Wireless network installation: $100+
  • PC tuneup: $70
  • Virus removal: $70
  • Operating system formatting: $100

Who can repair my computer?

Professional computer repair technicians have the training and certifications to reliably fix your computer. These technicians often have their own small shop. Large retailers like Best Buy, Office Depot, and Staples also offer repair services.

Is paying to repair a computer worth it?

Repairing a computer is worth it if the repairs cost substantially less than the price of a new device. If your computer is fairly new and normally runs well, consider a repair instead of a replacement. If you computer is more than 3 to 8 years old and regularly has issues, it may be better to replace it.

How long does a computer last?

Computers typically last 3 to 8 years, depending on the brand, quality, and how well you take care of it. Desktops tend to last slightly longer than laptops.

Standard manufacturer warranties typically last 6 months to 3 years and cover the original owner. Check your computer's warranty policy if it is fairly new and has problems with its hardware that were not caused by you. This might include:

  • Broken keyboard or keys
  • Monitor defects
  • Malfunctioning modem
  • Problems with internal component

How much do computer repair technicians make?

Computer repair technicians make $20 to $40 per hour or $40,000 to $80,000 per year, depending on their location and level of experience. Specialists, supervisors, and business owners usually make more than Geek Squad employees or junior clerks.

How do I choose a computer repair service?

Start by searching our list of computer repair contractors, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Examine reviews and previous work on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Choose a company that is licensed, bonded, and experienced.
  • Look for someone with certifications such as Computer Service Technician (CST).
  • Make sure they have insurance and offer a warranty.
  • Get a written estimate and contract before work begins.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making large payments up front.

After asking questions and verifying credentials, hire the best computer repair company in your area.

What questions should I ask computer repair contractors?

When looking for local computer repair companies, consider asking the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Are you licensed, insured, and bonded?
  • What certifications do you have?
  • Do you offer same-day service? If not, how far in advance should I book?
  • How do you handle any accidental damage?
  • How long will the repair take?
  • Do you have any discounts for seniors or students?
  • Do you offer a warranty for your work?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

I don't bother posting reviews, but this is worth it because he was really nice. I am DONE hiring "cheap" techs. The last guy was awful. Foolish me thinking $55/hr would get me an expert. I called Shannon about a wireless problem or internet problem several days ago in the late afternoon. This guy is a god. I was behind on my work and my school papers for my online class, and it seemed like the internet was broken. Shannon came out early the next morning FULLY PREPARED! He had EVERYTHING! He got Cox on the phone line and he knew everything to say. I could hear the tech ask questions that were wasting time. Shannon took control of the situation and it was fun to hear him speak their language better than them and guided THEM through the whole problem. My house is quite long and the cable modem is on the other end of the house from my bedroom/office so wifi doesn't work well. Shannon explained that the best solution was to put in a network cable in the attic to connect the whole house. I felt bad having him in the attic! It has been over 110 degrees outside every day lately! But he did it! He even had everything with him and didn't have to come back which was great because of my busy schedule. He also ended up replacing my cable modem (which cox said needed to be done), installed a new professional router and wifi "access point" that he connected to the new attic cable. Cox said I was only getting 5 megabits download speed before it was fixed but paying for 150 megabits. Shannon fixed it and now I get 160 download speed!! Two other techs had suggested "wifi extenders" which did not work and wasted my time and money. I'm not stressed or p*ssed off at my computer anymore. Money well-spent. Everything is working perfectly, and I love having my own computer person on speed dial. : ) Thank you, Shannon.
