About
Landscaping is an ever more important extension of the home living environment. As a full-service landscape construction company, we have been turning homes into destinations since 1985. That’s 35 years of solving challenges most Essex County homeowners face maybe twice in a lifetime.
We believe in sustainable landscape designs that address practical realities such as water usage, maintenance and value. Our designs utilize mature plants and premium products.
Much has changed since the beginning, but our design principles have stood the test of time. Each new project is a blank canvas; a fresh slate of possibilities limited only by creativity. Like any work of art, landscape and garden design boils down to color, texture, scale and composition. A balance of these elements is necessary for satisfaction that lasts decades.
Our goal is to help you recharge from the day-to-day, accommodate loved ones or simply enjoy nature. We will discuss challenges and logical solutions to create a visually coherent and stimulating outdoor space.
We turn homes into destinations.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
With any new project, first we identify the scope of needs and approximate budget.
Computer-aided design software helps visualize the project. Multiple digital photos are overlaid with desired plantings. After designing and refining the digital images are transferred to a buildable paper plan.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In 1985 after completing my studies in Horticulture and Landscape Design at Rutgers University, I started my business. We have been working on both sides of First Mountain for over 30 years and much has changed in that time, but our passion for creating exquisite landscapes is permanent.
Although Montclair is our primary location we serve all of Essex County. This area provides the unique environment to execute our knowledge and assist homeowners. There are particular realities of living on or at the bottom of a mountain, such as excess shade and drainage problems. The past 10 years have also seen the explosion in the deer population. Our extensive knowledge of the problems specific to this area is the most valuable asset to our customers.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Where possible we follow industry standard labor and material prices.
The biggest variables in any project cost are unforeseen subsoil conditions. For instance, under one new patio foundation was an enormous deteriorating concrete slab, presumably the previous walkway. That incurred an added disposal cost.
Different properties present unique working challenges and procedures. We prefer to give an informed visual estimate before a quote, for the benefit of both parties.
