Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to start by finding out some backstory on what my client likes to use the computer for. From there I like to gather backstory on what led up to the current issue they are having as well as past issues the computer has had. After the history and case use has been established an appointment is set and confirmed so I can be hands-on with the device and issue.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm self-taught beyond any available certificate or formal training. I've been working with and on the computer since I was around 8 years old. Experimenting with the computer when I was younger was a passion of mine and consequentially I ended up breaking it multiple times while testing new functions or features. Instead of waiting months for a family member to come out and correct the issue I put myself to the task of repairing whatever damage I caused and learned to troubleshoot at a very young age. From there I became the "family IT Person" and was often called out to relatives to assist with their computer & internet issues.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
When possible I like to keep the flat rate for most repairs at or around $150 + parts. Having a standard rate Allows me to work as diligently as possible while ensuring my clients are getting a fair price for the superb service they receive.
We do charge hourly for in-home repairs due to the many variables that onsite repairs can include. The majority of onsite jobs don't take longer than 1-2 hours.
How did you get started in this business?
I was working part-time in a non IT related industry and unable to find any IT related job openings in the Southern Maryland Area. I was already known to family and friends as the "IT Guy" so after a discussion with my wife I decided to start my own business and offer my service to others. The Business had a side effect of getting me hired at our local GeekSquad and I worked there for about a year and a half before realizing that I had to make a choice on my part-time job or going full time with my business to better serve my clients who needed more availability. The decision was made and We've been in business 4 years now.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've had a diverse client base since the start of the business. We service many residential users who use their computers just for email and web browsing but also those who work from home or do online gaming.
Over the years I've also offered services to nearby small & medium sized businesses that don't have a full time IT department on staff. In these cases, my task was to remediate issues and set up an effective plan moving forward to minimize downtime & increase productivity.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event I'm fond of would probably include some of the praise we've received from recent clients who have mentioned that we've come out and corrected their issues before the other companies they contacted initially for help have even returned their phone calls.
Another recent even would include our client on maintenance plans who celebrate that we are able to contact them about the issues they are having even before they have the chance to contact us. This allows us to take actionable steps to fix the issues before they become critical.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Do your research. Decide how much your computer & data is worth before taking it to an obscure repair shop or unprofessional business. One of the most difficult tasks in the industry is repairing the damage done by someone who thought they knew what they were doing but actually just ended up making the issue worse. This is especially true in regards to failing hard drives & potential data loss. In critical situations as these, amatuer help ends up costing way more than a professional in the long run.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
How old is my computer?
How much did I pay for my computer?
How much am I willing to spend on getting my computer back to a usable state versus just getting the information from it.
