Southside Painting
About
Southside Painting in the Boston metro west area offers fine interior and exterior painting services, and minor carpentry repairs. Free estimates. Owned and operated by John Stoddart, with over fifteen years in business.
Each painting project is unique. I enjoy working with clients to focus on their specific home improvement needs. It is satisfying to improve the appearance of a space through prep and painting work, and to have the appreciation of the homeowner as well.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
After a brief phone or e-mail conversation, I typically meet with the client to view the work space in question and get a first hand view of the requirements and goals of the job. After the meeting I provide a written estimate detailing the job (including Labor and Materials), often including options that may have been suggested in the course of discussion. If the proposal is accepted, then a mutually agreeable time to start the work is arranged.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Prior to my career working in home improvement, I was a research biologist (Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Boston University, 1990). Although these fields apparently do not overlap, my training as a scientist is valuable because of my organizational and analytical skills, writing ability, and attention to detail.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Although many projects are similar, each job is unique depending on the circumstances and client's requests. Thus each proposal is tailored to the specific needs of each client.
How did you get started teaching?

What types of customers have you worked with?
My customers are generally homeowners, also renters, and commercial property owners.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
As an example, I recently rebuilt doors on a shed (from scratch) for a long time customer.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Try to find a professional by word of mouth from a friend (can't argue with success!) and/or ask for references.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
This depends on the home improvement project in question. But in general, one may keep in mind what may be the Minimum amount of work required (i.e. repair and paint a damaged ceiling) versus a Maximum that may be desired (i.e. repair and paint ceiling, plus paint all walls and trim).
