Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Laminate Floor Installation questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

What is laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring is a composite flooring that consists of multiple layers—a base layer of high-density fiberboard or plywood, an image layer that looks like wood, stone, or tile, and a clear, protective, wear layer. Laminate flooring comes in tiles or planks, with thicknesses ranging from 6mm to 12mm+, and many colors, styles, and finishes to choose from. All laminate flooring is water-resistant, but not all types are waterproof.

How much does laminate flooring cost?

Laminate flooring costs $4 to $14 per square foot or $2,000 to $7,000 installed on average for a 500 square foot space. The materials alone cost $1 to $6 per square foot, while the installation labor costs $3 to $8 per square foot. Several factors impact the total cost, including the area size, installation complexity, floor thickness, and features like scratch resistance and water resistance level.

How long do laminate floors last?

Properly installed laminate flooring can last 10 to 25 years, depending on factors such as type, quality, thickness, and maintenance. You can get a general estimate of the flooring's lifespan under normal wear and tear by checking the manufacturer's warranty length.

Is laminate flooring cheaper than carpet?

While installing carpet is generally $2 to $6 per square foot cheaper than installing laminate flooring, laminate flooring offers a better return on investment due to its longer lifespan, ease of cleaning, and allergen resistance. Carpet installation costs typically range from $2 to $8 per square foot for materials and labor.

How long does it take to install laminate flooring?

On average, laminate flooring installation takes 4 to 5 days, including material acclimation, site preparation, and the actual installation. The installation itself usually takes a few hours to one day, depending on factors such as the type of laminate, room size, and layout. Site preparation involves creating a smooth, level surface and may require removing existing flooring, cleaning the surface, and laying an underlayment if necessary.

Most laminate flooring manufacturers recommend allowing 48 to 72 hours for the flooring materials to acclimate in the space before installation to prevent the planks or tiles from buckling or separating once installed.

Can you install laminate flooring over other flooring?

In some cases, you can install laminate flooring over other flooring if the existing flooring is smooth, level, in good condition, and free of debris. However, certain types of flooring, such as carpet, Saltillo tile, and some natural stones, may not provide a suitable base for laminate flooring.

How do I clean laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring is easy to maintain but it requires a different approach than other flooring types. Here are some things you can do to ensure its longevity:

  • Sweep with a soft broom regularly to prevent dirt buildup in the cracks and crevices. Alternatively vacuum the floor using your vacuums hard floor setting.
  • Clean the floor at least once per monthwith a damp mop and laminate floor cleaner. Be sure the mop is damp and not wet, as most laminate floors are not waterproof. Dry the floor with a clean microfiber cloth.
  • Clean in the direction of the grain to prevent hazing or streaks. Use laminate floor cleaner sparingly.
  • Buff scuffs away with a clean tennis ball, and always clean up spills right away to prevent damage.
  • Use protective mats under pet dishes and pads under furniture.
  • Consider removing your shoes before walking on the flooring.

Things to avoid with laminate flooring:

  • Vacuums with a beater bar
  • Heat, steam, and excessive moisture
  • Floor polish or wax
  • Harsh or abrasive cleaners, brushes, and sponges
  • Ammonia- or oil-based cleaners

How do I choose a laminate flooring company near me?

When researching laminate flooring companies near you, remember to:

Look for flooring installers that specialize in laminate flooring.

  • Get at least 3 detailed estimates to compare. Make sure the estimates include the flooring, underlayment, and installation.
  • Hire a licensed, bonded, and insured laminate flooring company that has been in business for 5+ years.
  • Read laminate flooring installer reviews on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Ask for photos of past installations, as well as references you can contact.
  • Have a written contract and warranty in hand before the installation begins.
  • Avoid making large upfront payments and don't pay in full until the installation is complete.

What questions should I ask when getting estimates for laminate flooring installation?

Ask the following questions can help you choose the most qualified laminate flooring installer near you:

  • How long have you been installing laminate flooring in this area?
  • Is your company licensed, insured, and bonded?
  • How long will the installation take?
  • How should I prepare my home for the flooring installation?
  • Does the estimate include all materials, site prep, installation, and cleanup?
  • Will you dispose of the old flooring, and is the disposal included in the estimate?
  • What additional costs do you see typically come up on a job like this?
  • Who is my main point of contact during the installation?
  • Who do I contact if there are problems after the installation?
  • Do you offer a warranty on the installation?
  • Will you submit the manufacturer warranty registration for me?

Reviews for Columbus laminate flooring installers

Recent success stories from people in the Columbus area.
PATRICIA K.
I was impressed with the team who removed the carpet from the dining and living room. They made it seem easy. The refinisher,Kristen, was focused on her work bringing my 107 yr. old floors back to life. She even made some modifications to repair the floors in some spots. She loves what she does and she’s really good at it! I called her a miracle worker more than once. Everything was finished on time and within my budget. I would have liked Phil to do a final walk through inspection. I found a doorway threshold section that still had carpet tacks and didn’t get sanded or stained. Overall, I am pleased with the work.
