Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Granite Countertop Installers questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much do granite countertops cost?

Granite countertops cost $80 to $150 per square foot installed, on average. For a typical kitchen 30 to 40 square foot countertop, granite slab countertops with installation can cost anywhere from $2,400 to $6,000.

Several factors affect the price of granite countertops, including the size of the slabs, their thickness, their grade, and the type of finish chosen. Installation labor costs also play a role, and these can vary depending on the complexity of the project. Additionally, edge profiles, cutouts for sinks and cooktops, and the addition of a granite backsplash can all add to the overall cost.

To save money on granite countertops, consider less popular or remnant slabs, opt for a honed or leathered finish instead of polished, simplify the edge profile, and shop around for quotes from different fabricators and installers.

What is the cheapest granite countertop?

The most budget-friendly option for granite countertops involves using granite tiles, with the tile cost ranging from $6 to $15 per square foot. This is significantly lower, about 75% to 80% less, than the cost of full granite slabs. Another economical choice is modular granite countertops, utilizing smaller slabs with fewer grout lines than tiles, typically priced between $25 and $40 per square foot before installation.

For those seeking affordable full slab granite countertops, the least expensive options often come in tan, brown, or black hues—common and readily available colors. These slabs typically fall under level 1 granite and often feature speckled and vibrant designs. To maximize cost savings, consider purchasing directly from a local granite supplier, as this can result in savings of 15% to 25% compared to buying through a remodeling contractor or interior designer.

Why are granite countertops so expensive?

Granite countertops are expensive because of the stone and the processes involved in extracting, transporting, fabricating, and installing it. Granite is a natural resource quarried from the earth, and the extraction process requires skilled labor and heavy machinery. The limited availability of high-quality and visually appealing granite contributes to its price, as rarer patterns and colors can be more expensive.

Transportation and import costs further increase the overall expense, as granite is often sourced from quarries worldwide and shipped to various locations. The durability and hardness of add to its value, with higher-quality stones commanding higher prices. In addition to the costly fabrication and installation processes, customization, intricate edge profiles, and specific cuts can also raise costs.

How much does Granite Transformations cost?

Granite Transformations offers an installed cost ranging from $100 to $130 per square foot, depending on the project's size. The company utilizes a thin granite overlay, composed of crushed quartz, granite, recycled glass, and polymer resin, which is applied directly over existing countertops. This overlay is nonporous, eliminating the need for sealing.

While Granite Transformations' pricing may compete with that of genuine granite slab countertops, the company emphasizes environmental benefits and reduced installation stress, as its process requires no demolition or disposal. Residential installations are accompanied by a limited lifetime warranty.

How long does it take to install granite countertops?

The installation of granite countertops varies in duration, ranging from two hours to a full day or longer. The time required depends on factors such as the size and complexity of the job, the number of slabs involved, and the size and experience level of the installation crew.

Generally, smaller projects like bathroom or compact kitchen countertop installations, without unforeseen complications, can be completed in less than a day.

How long do granite countertops last?

Durable granite countertops can last for decades or even a lifetime when well-maintained. The key factors influencing their lifespan encompass the quality of the granite, the precision of the installation process, and the level of care they receive.

Granite, as a natural stone, is distinguished by its hardness and resistance to scratches and heat, making it less susceptible to damage from routine kitchen activities compared to many other countertop materials. When properly sealed, granite also exhibits resistance to stains. Regular maintenance practices, including periodic resealing (dependent on the granite type and usage), gentle cleaning with mild soap and water, and avoidance of harsh chemicals, contribute to preserving both the appearance and structural integrity of granite countertops.

Do granite countertops add value to a home?

Granite countertops add value to a home, particularly when integrated into a kitchen or primary bathroom renovation. Although granite countertops may not be the latest trend, the enduring appeal of this natural stone lies in its durability, aesthetic charm, and resistance to depreciation.

Prospective homebuyers often favor granite slab over granite tile, given the former's lower maintenance demands and more unified appearance. Slab countertops are perceived as more attractive, providing a cohesive and polished look that appeals to those seeking both durability and aesthetic sophistication.

How do I choose a granite installer?

When shopping for local granite countertop installers, follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and successful project:

  • Gather 3 to 5 detailed quotes from reputable companies offering comparable granite quality.
  • Look for contractors or firms accredited by the National Stone Institute (NSI), demonstrating their expertise and commitment to quality standards in granite installation.
  • Research online review platforms like HomeGuide and Google to gauge past customer experiences and establish the company's reputation.
  • Request a portfolio showcasing the company's previous granite countertop installations. This provides visual evidence of their craftsmanship and aesthetic capabilities.
  • Ask for local references with contact information so you can speak directly with past clients and get firsthand accounts of their experiences.
  • Choose a licensed, bonded, and insured company with at least five years of experience.
  • While price is important, be wary of extremely low bids than can indicate inferior granite quality or substandard labor, ultimately resulting in disappointment.
  • Before work begins, obtain a comprehensive contract outlining the scope of work, materials, warranties, and payment schedule.
  • Pay in stages based on project completion. Avoid making the final payment until the project is finished and you are fully satisfied with the outcome.

What questions should I ask a granite installer?

Consider asking these questions to any prospective granite installers to find the right contractor for your project:

  • How long have you been installing granite countertops?
  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
  • Do you have any certifications or accreditations, such as NSI (National Stone Institute) certification?
  • Can you provide me with references from past clients?
  • What is your process for selecting granite slabs?
  • Can I participate in the layout of the countertops?
  • What is your estimated timeline for the project?
  • What is your warranty on the installation?
  • What are your payment terms?
  • What type of underlayment will you use?
  • How will you handle seams?
  • How will you protect my cabinets and floors during the installation?
  • What is your process for cleaning up after the installation?
  • What happens if I am not happy with the installation?
  • Do you offer any additional services, such as sink installation or backsplash installation?
  • Do you charge a flat fee for the installation?
  • Have you ever installed granite countertops in a kitchen similar to mine?
  • What advice do you have for maintaining my granite countertops?
