What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Always whether new or old customer, first hear what they have to say regarding their problem.
Then approch the said problem based on that discussion, no parts will be changed until the customer agrees to it.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
First tell them everything that happened, then ask them what they will do for you then of course the cost as well as an approximate time to complete.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
being upfront about issues on your equipment, also know there are no stupid questions.
