Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Initially I like to set up a consultation on site to discuss the scope of work. I like to do a visual inspection to make sure the project is plausible and give any suggestions. At that point, we can discuss the need for drawings or blueprints. I personally offer design assistance, but will work with one of my architects if blueprints are required. For projects that don't require blueprints, I like to work with the customer to design the space and will give pricing according to finishes.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
EPA Certification, NYS Housing Certified, OSHA Certified
How did you get started in this business?
I've been in this field since the age of 16. My uncle was a high-end builder and I worked for many different trades throughout my life. I eventually worked as a Field Supervisor and Project Manager for many years until I started my own company in 2001.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Homeowners with residential construction projects, Commercial projects including stores and offices as well as working with other builders.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
New restaurant in Aquebogue.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Always compare 3 contractors. Many will give a price without disclosing that certain aspects of the project are not included. You may hire the lowest bidder just to find out that half of what you thought was included was not and they now have become an added expense. Always get referrals!
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
It's always good for a customer to have an idea or concept of what they want. First make sure the Contractor clearly sees your vision and has the knowledge to undertake it. For instance, I recently fixed a wall removal for a client. The previous builder took down a load bearing wall whereas the clients were told it wasn't load bearing. The ceiling began to sag and I had to open it up and install beams. I've fixed many contractor mistakes. It's also helpful to know what finishes you like such as kitchen cabinets, countertops, railings, vanities, fixtures, etc... These finishes can affect the price of a project.
