Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Conversation first.
Speak openly to us, as you may speak to your doctor - to know what needs to be done requires an exam.
We are known as a “Greenwich Avenue Firm”. We pride ourselves on working closely with our clients, listening carefully and tailoring our design exactly to what our clients need – not less but not more. Our design ambitions do not stand in our clients’ way - projects we design belong to our clients – not to us, and we understand that well.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Masters Degree in Architecture in 1975
Coninuous education
Lifetime of practical experience
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
For the custom house design the standard pricing system might be offered, but if set up properly, considering all the variables, it will resemble the IRS tax filing forms, the long version.
Otherwise, any professional suggesting the standard pricing for the true custom designed house is either has no knowledge of the process at all, or:
Padding the cost up so high, that whatever happens after professional is hired, he or she will not lose money, or:
Low-balling with an intent to up the costs after work had begun.
The fixed price needs a good conversation with the client and without it and without knowing the site - it will be akin to offering a car at a fixed price, without mentioning what car is being priced. It is a vulgar but true analogy.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We have close to a thousand of homes designed and our clients are just that - homeowners. First time buyers, upgraders. Bus driver and schoolteacher couple, fixing the first house, they have just bought. Wealthy investment banker from the Wall Street. Trust funder with Mayflower roots. Russian, Chinese or Argentinian billionaire. And anything in between.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Do not spend your time making the floor plan layouts (either on paper or in your mind).
Look either at the homes you may like visually – the actual buildings or the once in the magazines.
If you don't have the site and just looking for a new buildable lot or existing house to remodel - contact the architect before you made a purchase. It may save you a lot of money.
