Lourdes M. says, "Marc is an absolute professional! I am a property manager and hired him to do a slew of sprinkler winterizations. He got it done in a timely manner, used our system to make notes, upload photos and invoices. Amazing to work with and I would recommend to anyone looking for a top notch vendor with great responsive and communication. He’s a lovely person. I would definitely work with him again!" Read more

Caitlyn G. says, "I cannot recommend Stephen enough! He was truly one of the best handymen I've ever had! We had some problems with our bathroom, so I searched for handymen in my area and after messaging a countless amount of men, Stephen responded extremely quickly and he also quoted us the best price (seriously his price was unmatched). He was extremely professional, and he asked lots of questions and I could tell he was very intent on doing a good job. He ended up staying 3.5hours because he did such an amazing and detailed job. The final product was top notch work. I felt bad that the project took so long and offered to pay him a bit more, but he honored the initial estimated cost for me. I was impressed by his integrity. He could've easily taken advantage of the situation and he didn't. He was professional and friendly until the very end. A+ experience and look forward to working with him in the future." Read more

Your Handyman questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does a handyman service charge?

Handyman hourly rates are $50 to $80 on average, plus the cost of materials. Most handyman work costs $150 to $600, depending on the job's size and if the handyman is self-employed or corporate. Handymen who purchase materials may have a 20% to 50% markup or a trip charge of $30 to $80.

What can a handyman legally do?

A handyman can legally do small jobs and repairs like painting a room, hanging a TV, unclogging a drain, patching a wall, replacing a ceiling fan, fixing a fence or gate, cleaning gutters, or replacing a toilet. Some states have limits on the amount handymen can legally charge before needing a license.

Can a handyman do plumbing or electrical work?

Only licensed handymen can do plumbing or electrical work. Although, a handyman may legally do small electrical and plumbing jobs in some states, like replacing a toilet. For larger projects, it's best to hire electricians or plumbers in your area.

How to find a local handyman in your area?

Start by searching our list of handyman services near you. After finding and contacting potential candidates:

  • Get at least three quotes to compare.
  • Read reviews and check out their previous work on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Select handyman contractors that are licensed, bonded, and experienced.
  • Discuss rates and payment methods upfront.
  • Avoid selecting the lowest quote as quality may suffer.
  • Ask for at least a 1-year labor warranty.
  • Get a full breakdown of all labor and material costs involved.
  • Ask about their warranties and guarantees.
  • Discuss job timelines, work hours, and expectations for larger projects.
  • Avoid making payments upfront. Instead, pay when the work is completed.

How do I hire a nearby handyman?

When looking to hire a local handyman, ask the following questions:

  • What type of work can you do?
  • What is your hourly rate?
  • Do you have a trip charge for getting materials?
  • How much do you mark up materials?
  • Can you provide a written estimate upfront?
  • Do you have local references or a portfolio of your work?
  • Are you licensed, insured, and bonded?
  • What hours do you work?
  • How long will the job take?
  • How do you handle additional work that arises?
  • Do you provide a guarantee?
  • How do you handle damages that happen on the job?
  • Do you work alone, or will you use subcontractors?
  • What’s your payment schedule?

After asking questions and comparing estimates, hire the best handyman in your area.

Does a handyman need a license?

Many states have a “Handyman Exemption” that only requires a license for jobs over $500 to $10,000 or more, varying by state. In other states, a license is mandatory for all work. Many states also require worker’s compensation and liability insurance to protect against damage or accidents.

Do you tip a handyman?

Handymen don't expect a tip. If the handyman goes above and beyond or spends more time than expected, a tip is appreciated. Most homeowners tip a handyman $10 to $20 or between 10% and 15% of the total job.

My usual sprinkler system guy never showed up for scheduled system blow out. The first snow storm hit and I had to find a new person and thankfully Marc answered and was available. He came three days after contacting him to find my system even with wrapping in blankets and pillows cases the system was frozen. He tired to melt with his heat gun for 20 minutes but too frozen and because of the cold a part broke. He was forced to come back after water in pipes melted and he came back 2 days later and able to repair the system and blow it out while I was at work. Sent me pictures and videos to keep me in the loop. Very professional and amazing. I figured he would charge me for each visit but worked with me and only charged me for blow out and the part replacement. He will now be my regular guy and will be using him to open and winterizing my sprinkler system in future. Thanks again Marc. 🙂👍

Job: Demolish and replace 3-4' cinderblock retaining wall. Review: Mr. Alvarado and his team are true professionals. The communication and responsiveness was the best I've experienced with any contractor I have hired. Mr. Alvarado is truly skilled at his craft and created a tremendous end-product. Would hire again for any masonry work. Highly recommend.
