Karen C. says, "David Kim is absolutely wonderful to work with! He is very responsive, ansd he listens and attempts to make everything as easy as possible. I sought his help when my all-in one desk top computer started to make this whirring sound. Unbeknownst to me ( I am not tech savvy ), my hard drive was likely on its last leg. He backed everything up on a thumb drive, replaced the hard drive. The sound which is something new is likely a part that has to be ordered from China. he reassured me that the sound would not interfere with the function of the hard drive, and suggested not spending money to replace it since the part is only available from China and arrival could take a while. Since the sound lasted for a good portion of 2 hours, the part has been ordered. We'll see how long shipping that takes" Read more

Who can repair my computer?

Professional computer repair technicians have the training and certifications to reliably fix your computer. These technicians often have their own small shop. Large retailers like Best Buy, Office Depot, and Staples also offer repair services.

Is paying to repair a computer worth it?

Repairing a computer is worth it if the repairs cost substantially less than the price of a new device. If your computer is fairly new and normally runs well, consider a repair instead of a replacement. If you computer is more than 3 to 8 years old and regularly has issues, it may be better to replace it.

How long does a computer last?

Computers typically last 3 to 8 years, depending on the brand, quality, and how well you take care of it. Desktops tend to last slightly longer than laptops.

Standard manufacturer warranties typically last 6 months to 3 years and cover the original owner. Check your computer's warranty policy if it is fairly new and has problems with its hardware that were not caused by you. This might include:

  • Broken keyboard or keys
  • Monitor defects
  • Malfunctioning modem
  • Problems with internal component

How much do computer repair technicians make?

Computer repair technicians make $20 to $40 per hour or $40,000 to $80,000 per year, depending on their location and level of experience. Specialists, supervisors, and business owners usually make more than Geek Squad employees or junior clerks.

How do I choose a computer repair service?

Start by searching our list of computer repair contractors, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Examine reviews and previous work on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Choose a company that is licensed, bonded, and experienced.
  • Look for someone with certifications such as Computer Service Technician (CST).
  • Make sure they have insurance and offer a warranty.
  • Get a written estimate and contract before work begins.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making large payments up front.

After asking questions and verifying credentials, hire the best computer repair company in your area.

What questions should I ask computer repair contractors?

When looking for local computer repair companies, consider asking the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Are you licensed, insured, and bonded?
  • What certifications do you have?
  • Do you offer same-day service? If not, how far in advance should I book?
  • How do you handle any accidental damage?
  • How long will the repair take?
  • Do you have any discounts for seniors or students?
  • Do you offer a warranty for your work?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?
