How did you get started in this business?
I started when I was 18 right out of Highschool after taking architecture electives in shop class and throughly enjoying them for the previous 4 years.
I work worked at my first firm for 11 years starting freshmen year of college and learned under a Fellow in the AIA. It gave me a huge boost when I was done with architecture school; and it allowed me the ability to use my technically know to work intelligently on the creative aspects of architecture.
I got into construction because I wanted to design my own home and build it with a minimalist detailed aesthetic. I could not find a builder in town who had the expertise in minimalist detail modern homes. So that gave us the boost to be a dual discipline firm. The results are fantastic; by having both disciplines under one roof because it reduces much of the back and forth the often occurs in home construction for clients.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Unanimously our customers are high in the creative appreciation spectrum and want something unique. They have a dream or vision of a home or living experience and want an artist to bring that to life form them. They often may no be be able to fully express it or be satisfied with copying what they see on Pinterest; so they want an architect to work through the design and construction with them.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am fond of completing 3 projects in a row and putting the clients memories in a time capsule cornerstone on the home. They placed items like notes to their future self, photos of the house being built, notes to their future grandkids. Baby booties, toys... etc. it's goes a long way to memorialize the journey we all just went on together.
Invest the time having an architect research and analyze a game plan for your project before jumping in with a full quote commitment. I can provide several occurrences where this has benefited clients and a significant way.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
1. What do you want want ie a list of spaces bulleted
2. What size if you have any in mind for each space.
3. Overall construction budget.
4. Consider costs while in construction like storing goods, renting, contingency budget in case of national shortages like COVID caused.
5. pictures you may have saved - not to be copied but to discuss quality of space.
6. idea of what design method you prefer.
