Michael C. says, "I could not be more pleased with the renovation of my condominium that I contracted with Evershine Construction. Owner Raymond Kim is friendly, polite, knowledgable, and professional. While he is managing several projects at once, Ray is “hands-on” and visits the site daily. He is completely accessible throughout the project. Christopher So (also on-site daily) is the cabinet person and was unbelievably helpful in making decisions on kitchen cabinets as well as helpful suggestions on bathroom tile and flooring throughout. Their workers are amazing! The work ethic, positivity, and attention to detail show me that this is a well-oiled machine. It was a long process involving demolition, tile, flooring, paint, cabinets, new shower, countertop, appliances, and more. If anything wasn’t perfect, they stayed with it until the job was correct. Customer satisfaction is important to Evershine Construction. Raymond Kim and Christopher So are excellent leaders. They are quick to respond to any concerns, and I’m really happy with the results! Without question, contract these folks with confidence for your next project!" Read more

Your bathroom painting questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does it cost to paint a bathroom?

The cost to paint a bathroom can vary significantly based on the size of the space. For a small bathroom or half bath, you can expect to pay between $150 and $400. This price range typically covers basic materials and labor, making it an affordable option for a quick refresh. If you're considering a simple color change or touch-ups, this budget is often sufficient to achieve a clean and updated look.

For larger bathrooms, the costs increase accordingly. An average bathroom or small primary bath generally ranges from $250 to $650, while painting a large primary bathroom can set you back anywhere from $300 to $1,500. Factors influencing these prices include the quality of paint used, the complexity of the job (such as intricate trim work), and whether any prep work is needed, like patching holes or repairing surfaces. Ultimately, understanding these price ranges can help you plan your budget effectively while achieving the desired aesthetic for your bathroom.

What type of paint is best for a bathroom?

For bathrooms, semi-gloss or satin finishes are typically the best choices. These finishes are moisture-resistant and easy to clean, making them ideal for the humid environment of a bathroom. Semi-gloss paint offers a shinier appearance and is particularly good at repelling water, while satin provides a softer, more subtle sheen.

When selecting paint, look for products specifically formulated for bathrooms. These paints often contain mildew-resistant additives to combat moisture-related issues. Some brands even offer paint-and-primer combinations, which can save time and provide better coverage, especially on moisture-prone surfaces.

What is the best paint color for a small bathroom?

Light, cool colors are often recommended for small bathrooms to create an illusion of space. Soft blues, light grays, and pale greens can make a bathroom feel larger and airier. These colors reflect light well, brightening the space and giving it a clean, fresh appearance.

However, don't be afraid to consider darker hues for a small bathroom. Deep, rich colors can create a cozy, intimate atmosphere when paired with proper lighting. For instance, a dark navy or forest green can add depth and sophistication to a small space, especially when balanced with white fixtures and good lighting.

Can you paint a bathroom vanity?

Yes, you can paint a bathroom vanity, and it's an excellent way to update your bathroom's look without a full renovation. Before painting, thoroughly clean the vanity and sand it lightly to create a surface the new paint can adhere to. Use a primer designed for the vanity's material (wood, laminate, etc.) to ensure good paint adhesion.

For the best results, choose a durable paint finish like semi-gloss or high-gloss. These finishes are easy to clean and stand up well to moisture. Consider using a paint sprayer for a smooth, professional-looking finish, or opt for high-quality brushes and rollers for a more DIY-friendly approach.

Can you paint bathroom tiles?

Yes, it is possible to paint bathroom tiles, and it can be a cost-effective way to refresh your bathroom's appearance. However, it's important to note that painted tiles may not be as durable as the original tile finish, especially in high-moisture areas like shower walls.

To paint tiles successfully, start by thoroughly cleaning and sanding the tiles to create a surface the paint can adhere to. Use a high-adhesion primer specifically designed for tile surfaces, followed by a durable epoxy or urethane-based paint. For best results, apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat, and consider using a clear sealant for added protection against moisture and wear.

How do I choose a bathroom painter?

Choosing the right bathroom painter is essential for achieving a high-quality finish. Here are some key factors to consider during your selection process:

  • Experience: Look for painters with specific experience in bathroom projects, as they understand the unique challenges of working in moisture-prone areas.
  • Reviews and references: Read customer reviews and ask for references to gauge the quality of their work and customer satisfaction.
  • Licensing and insurance: Ensure the painter is licensed and insured to protect yourself from potential liabilities.
  • Detailed quotes: Obtain written quotes from multiple painters, detailing the scope of work, materials used, and estimated timelines.
  • Preparation process: Ask about their surface preparation methods to ensure proper adhesion and durability of the paint.
  • Clean-up procedures: Understand how they will protect your fixtures and floors during the painting process and their clean-up practices post-job.

What questions should I ask a bathroom painter?

When interviewing potential bathroom painters, asking the right questions can help you assess their expertise and ensure they’re a good fit for your project. Here are some important questions to ask:

  • What type of paint do you recommend for bathrooms, and why?
  • How do you prepare bathroom surfaces for painting?
  • What is your estimated timeline for completing the project?
  • Do you provide a warranty or guarantee for your work?
  • How do you protect fixtures and floors during the painting process?
  • Can you show me examples of previous bathroom projects you've completed?
  • What are your payment terms, and do you require a deposit?

Emington and his crew with Home Improvement were a pleasure to work with. And I want to start off by saying this house was in very bad shape. It might have been easier to knock this house down and rebuild. Home Improvement were professional with respect for the persons living in the house and neighbors that surrounded the area. Ermington’s crew works as a unit. The first time we met, Home Improvement gave me an estimate and the second time we met we discussed the details of the estimate. I was absolutely positive this house didn’t need a new roof. I couldn’t have been more wrong. In a blink of an eye the 4 men who came with Emington were grabbing their ladders and were now in the attic and on the roof of my house. As we talked Emington’s crew was sending him photos of the attic and roof damage. As we moved forward, I was blissfully unaware of what I wanted in colors and styles. Emington told me to drive around the neighborhood and look at siding and roof colors. Extremely good advice. I told him what I saw and from there he suggested what colors would complement each other. His crew replaced the roof first. There was no screaming or cross talking from the crew for the roof replacement. The siding was next. Same crew, same results. Excellent work and respectful. I noticed they paid attention to splices with the siding. Everything looked even with no gaps. The windows were next along with the air conditioning. The perfect plan was to bring each company to me for each project. Pella came in for the windows and showed me styles, designs, etc.… I never had to run around looking for what I wanted. There was no sales pitch and no one talked me into an upgrade. This also applied to the air conditioning. There was a timeline but because I worked in an environment where my clients always need a ship date, I was already prepared for delays and wrong products. I can assure you mistakes will happen to delay projects that are totally out of the contractor’s hands. But with Home Improvement, Emington took control and followed up on the issue right away. He would send me emails and updates. This was very much appreciated. There was also an emergency with my family and we had to put the entire project on hold for 30 days. Emington understood and he never gave me a hard time nor did he up charge me for lost time. Home Improvement and Emington and crew were very easy to work with. If I wanted to make a change, they would tell me honestly if that change would affect another room or if the cost was so far out of range I would decline. The crew was polite respectful, no cussing and they cleaned up after themselves. Emington’s crew also did little things to help us out. Took the battered trash cans and got rid of them for us, accepted delivers and so on. These things add up and, in the end, saves you time. At the moment, I decided to hire Emington and crew from Home Improvement to build a screened in back porch. My decision was based on his work and the art of his craft. I highly recommend Home Improvement as one of the best contractors I have ever worked with. This was not my first rodeo with a construction company to turn a house into home. This site was the first time I worked with a structure in ruin and Home Improvements turned it into a home. My highest recommendations go to Home Improvement, Emington and Crew. Emma Fox
