This is really important, first thing to look for is honesty, everyhing else falls from that: pricing, quality materials and professionalism.

First try to identify the problem without putting themselves in danger.
Ask about their experience in the field, ask if they are licensed contractors and last but not least ask them what kind of options they offer to solve your problem.
