Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Garage Door Opener Repair questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does garage door opener repair cost?

Repairing a garage door opener costs $75 to $300. Prices depend on the specific issue and the type of opener you have.

For minor repairs like replacing the remote control or sensors, you can expect to pay around $100 to $200. However, if the motor or circuit board needs to be replaced, the cost can range from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the opener model and labor involved.

Can you repair our own garage door opener?

Yes, it is possible to repair your own garage door opener, but it depends on the complexity of the issue and your level of technical expertise. For minor repairs like replacing the batteries in the remote control, adjusting the opener's force settings, or realigning the safety sensors, most homeowners can handle these tasks themselves with the help of the owner's manual and some basic tools.

However, more complex repairs involving the motor, circuit board, or other electrical components may require specialized knowledge and tools. Attempting these repairs without proper expertise could result in further damage or safety hazards. If you're unsure about your ability to complete the repair safely and correctly, it's advisable to hire a professional garage door repair service to ensure the job is done properly and to avoid potential injuries or further damage to the opener.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door opener?

Repairing a garage door opener is usually cheaper than replacing it, especially if the opener is relatively new and the issue is minor. Installing a new garage door opener costs $300 to $900, while a simple repair may cost less than $100.

However, if the opener is very old or has major issues, replacement may be the better option in the long run. Newer openers often come with improved safety features, quieter operation, and better energy efficiency. If the repair cost is significant compared to the age and condition of the existing opener, it might make more financial sense to invest in a new unit rather than repeatedly repairing an outdated or failing system.

How do I choose a garage door opener repair company?

Follow these tips for choosing a reputable garage door opener repair contractor:

  • Look for a company with extensive experience in garage door opener repairs and a proven track record.
  • Check online reviews on HomeGuide and Google and ask for references from previous customers to gauge their reputation.
  • Ensure the contractor is properly licensed as a general contractor and has liability insurance to protect you in case of accidents or damages during the repair work.
  • Confirm the company uses high-quality parts from trusted manufacturers and offer warranties on both the parts and labor.
  • Pay attention to how the company communicates, their responsiveness, punctuality, and whether they provide detailed written estimates. Professionalism is a good indicator of reliable service.
  • Insist on a detailed, itemized estimate outlining all costs associated with the repair. Avoid companies that provide quotes without inspecting the opener in person.
  • If you require immediate assistance, inquire about the company's availability for emergency repairs to avoid security and inconvenience issues.
  • Locally owned and operated garage door companies are more likely to stand behind their work and maintain a good reputation within the community.

What questions should I ask a garage door opener repair person?

Ask the repair person these important questions to ensure you hire a qualified professional who can properly diagnose the issue, use quality parts, and stand behind their work:

  • Are you licensed, bonded and insured for garage door opener repairs in my area?
  • How many years of experience do you have repairing garage door openers?
  • Do you specialize in repairing specific opener brands or models?
  • How will you diagnose the issue with my garage door opener?
  • What are the potential causes and repair options you foresee for my opener problem?
  • Do you provide a written estimate detailing parts and labor costs before proceeding with repairs?
  • Do you use original manufacturer parts for repairs or aftermarket components?
  • What warranties are provided on parts and labor for the repair work?
  • How long will the repair take to complete once you begin work?
  • Are there any additional fees beyond parts and labor, such as trip charges or service call minimums?
  • Can you provide a firm quote on the total repair cost, including parts and labor?
  • Can you provide references or reviews from previous garage door opener repair customers?
