Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Water Line Installation or Replacement questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does water line replacement cost?

Main water line replacement costs $50 to $250 per linear foot or $2,000 to $5,000 on average for the materials and labor. However, the total cost varies from as little as $620 to as much as $12,500, depending on the length of the water line, where it's located, and how deep it's buried.

It's important to note that many people use "water main", "main water line", and "water service line" interchangeably to refer to the water line runs from the street to the house, connecting the city's main water line to a home's plumbing system. However, this homeowner's water line is technically the "water service line" and the city's water line is the "water main".

How long does it take to replace a water line?

Replacing a water line can take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the length, depth, and the method used to replace it. Trenchless water line replacement is less disruptive and typically takes less than a day. Replacing a trenched water line that requires excavation, backfilling, and may involve significant repairs after the new line is installed could take much longer.

How long do main water lines last?

A main water line typically lasts 50 to 100 years, depending on the material. While most water service lines last a long time, professionals recommend scheduling a pipe inspection every 1 to 3 years to catch potential problems early—like roots growing into pipes—before they become serious and costly to repair.

Another reason for an inspection every few years is that, while the main water line can last 50+ years, the main water shut-off valve typically has a shorter lifespan of 10 to 20 years on average. This valve is crucial to the functionality of your home's plumbing system, and shutting it during a plumbing emergency could save thousands by preventing major water damage.

Does homeowners insurance cover the cost of main water line replacement?

Standard homeowners insurance policies typically do not cover main water line replacement if the damage is due to normal wear and tear. Many companies offer an add-on coverage option specifically for the main service line. Insurance may cover replacing the water line if the damage is due to a covered event, like a storm or fire.

How do I choose a plumber near me for water line replacement?

Before hiring a professional plumber near you to replace your main water line, be sure to:

  • Compare at least three detailed water line replacement estimates.
  • Select a reputable plumbing company that is licensed, insured, bonded, and has been in business for several years.
  • Look for plumbers with experience in water line replacement, and positive reviews on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Avoid going with the lowest bid since this can often indicate low-quality work or lack of experience.
  • Have a detailed contract and warranty in hand before they begin working.
  • Don't make the final payment until the job is complete and the water line has been tested.

What questions should I ask a plumber?

Asking these important questions can help you feel confident you've chosen the most qualified plumbing service to replace your water line:

  • What do you do to inspect the line and determine whether it needs repair or replacement?
  • How much experience to you have replacing water lines like this one?
  • What method do you recommend for replacing my water service line, and why?
  • What materials do you use for pipe lining? Are they safe for pipes that carry drinking water?
  • What exactly does the estimate include?
  • What other costs might come up when you're replacing the line?
  • How soon can you replace the water line?
  • Do you guarantee your work? How long is the warranty?
  • What is your preferred payment method and schedule?
