Your Window Installation questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does it cost to install a window?

Window replacement costs $400 to $1,500 per window installed, depending on the size, type, material, and brand. The window unit makes up 65% to 75% of the total cost, while labor makes up the other 25% to 35%.

Simple, single-hung windows and small picture windows cost the least to install, while large bay and bow windows cost the most.

Vinyl and aluminum are the least expensive and most common window materials. Wood window frames provide better insulation and an upscale look but cost more and are harder to maintain. Clad window frames are the most expensive option but last longer because they're made with vinyl-encased wood.

Are new windows worth the investment?

New windows are worth the investment if your home's existing windows are old, damaged, or if the windows are single-pane. Most new construction codes call for double-pane windows at a minimum due to the added energy efficiency. Installing new double-pane or triple-pane windows will reduce your energy costs and typically provides a 75% to 85% return on investment (ROI).

How long does it take to install windows?

Installing windows takes 30 to 60 minutes per window, depending on the size, type, and accessibility. Large or ornate windows take longer to install than small, simple windows. Installers can work faster on first-story windows than they can on second-story ones.

Replacing a large bay window or bow window can take a full day, depending on how many panels it has.

How often should you replace windows?

Windows last 15 to 30 years on average, depending on the material and brand. Window warranties typically last 5 to 20 years, although some are covered for as long as you own your home. Consider replacing windows if you notice any of these signs:

  • Difficulty opening or closing the window
  • Visible damage, such as a rotting frame or cracked glass
  • Condensation between window panes
  • Drafts around the windows
  • Increased energy bills
  • The windows are more than 20 years old.

Who installs windows?

Professional window fitting companies, glaziers, or handymen install windows. Labor to install windows costs $100 to $1,000 per window on average, depending on if you hire a professional window service company or a handyman. Most companies and handymen charge lower rates per window when replacing all the windows in your home at the same time.

Popular companies that offer window installation and replacement services include Andersen, Pella, Marvin, Window World, Champion, Home Depot, and Lowe's.

Do you tip window installers?

Tipping window installers and other contractors is not required or expected. However, consider tipping $20 to $30 per person if you feel the installers went above and beyond.

How do I hire a window installer?

Search our list of window installation contractors, then:

  • Get three or more free estimates to compare. Confirm the estimates feature windows of the same type, material, and quality.
  • Read reviews and browse previous work on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Choose a licensed, bonded, and experienced company.
  • Get a written estimate, contract, and warranty before work begins.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making big payments up front.

After following the previous steps, hire the best window company in your area.

What questions should I ask window installation contractors?

When hiring window installation companies near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Are you licensed, insured, and bonded?
  • Do you have windows in stock? If not, how long will it take to ship them?
  • What material or type of window would you recommend for this area?
  • Does the estimate include the window, labor, new parts, and cleanup?
  • How do you handle any damage or accidents that happen on the job?
  • How long will this project take?
  • Do you have any seasonal promotions or discounts?
  • Do you offer a warranty for your work?
  • Will you give me an estimate and contract in writing?

Reviews for Houston window installation

Brian B.
We got them to come out and give us an estimate on replacement of our old aluminum single pane drafty windows, Joel was very knowledgeable about the new technology on windows available in the current market. We selected a window company we heard alot about with almost every company that quoted us. We felt more Joel was the person we where more comfortable and could rely on to get us what we where looking for. Once custom made windows came in, we scheduled a day to start installation. Took 3 days to complete, we are completely satisfied with there work, they came out daily and prep are where windows where being removed, covered my floors with drop clothes and furnishings with plastic, cleaned up promptly, and did a wonderful job on the install. We will definitely call them again for any of our future home improvement needs.
