How did you get started in this business?
I was a Mechanical Engineer for a Design/Build Consulting Engineering Co and an Architectural Design firm in NY out of college. Moved to Maryland in 1993, started a Automotive Accy business in New Castle, DE in 2003, sold it in 2015. Decided to fall back on my Engineering backround and perform inspections for residential and/or commercial properties.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with individual clients, corporate owners/property managers, Architects, Engineers, Contractors, Building Depts, Inspectors and Product Manufactures in every aspect involved in construction & renovations of commercial and residential properties.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Years ago we were renovating a Finest Supermarket in Queens, NY. The contractor came in committed to a piece of equipment in lieu of traditional HVAC units. I visited the Manufactures facility and met with their engineers. I then conducted my own thermodynamic evaluation of this desiccant unit and determined it was unsuited for this application. I was the only one who objected in the design/build coordination meetings. My disapproval was sternly overridden by my superiors. Construction was completed in late Febuary. In early June the contractor was back insisting we misengineered this project. All my notes and calculations were in the job folder and protected the Company from lawsuits. The framework and steel design were also on file knowing that this would come back some day and the issue was corrected in few weeks !
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Knowledge is crucial. Would you Buy/Sell a property sight unseen ? How do you know... I could rattle off a list of questions about the roof/plumbing/drainage/hvac equipment/electrical... nobody wants a surprise. Hire an Inspector, he/she will look at all the variables and report on its current condition and advise accordingly so you are in the know!
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Nobody wants to Buy/Sell a defective product. Irreguardless of what side your on, wouldn't you want to know that the truest representation of the property was disclosed so neither the Buyer/Seller felt cheated or deceived in the transaction?
