Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
It's important to understand what the customer is trying to accomplish, and what budget they have in mind. Often we get a phone call or an inquiry asking us to "change the lock" on a door. The cost to physically change out the hardware is much greater than the cost to simply re-key the existing lock. Many homeowners aren't aware of this option.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Our locksmiths have a combined 30 years of experience in their craft, and we are part of an 80-branch network of Flying Locksmiths locations that regularly share knowledge as needed. On the rare occasion you have something we haven't seen before, we can draw from the experience of hundreds of locksmiths across the country to solve your problem.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
We will quote you pricing over the phone, or at least provide a price range if some aspects of the work are unknown. We NEVER bait & switch, and NEVER have hidden, unexpected costs that you aren't aware of.
How did you get started in this business?
I've always been interested in watching how technology can fundamentally change an industry, and the security industry is exploding with technological advancements right now. Really cool to see how our homes and businesses are changing and adapting.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We work with all types of residential and commercial customers, from your neighbor, to the small convenience store on the corner, to the largest employers in the Lehigh Valley. No challenge is too big or too small.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The future of our industry is in technology. Whether we upgrade a homeowner's entry door hardware to a wifi-enabled, smart phone controlled lockset, or replace a 300 door master key system with phone/fob access control, every challenge is unique. It can take months to spec out the correct access control system, and we work with you throughout the process to find the best match.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
1. Get a price over the phone. If you can't get at least a price range, walk away. 2. Check reviews and references. Ours are on our website and facebook page. 3. Don't let anyone tell you what you need, make them ask you what you want.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Think about what you need to accomplish...have you moved into a new house and don't know who else has key copies? You probably are just looking to make sure none of your neighbors or former owners can access the property, and a re-keying of the existing locks makes practical sense. If you're trying to eliminate keys altogether, there are several options available that we can discuss, from smartphone based solutions to passcode deadbolts. Determine a budget. Locksmiths don't work for free, yet our pricing gets questioned much more often than an HVAC, electrician, or a plumber's pricing. We'll work with you within your budget, and it’s important for all to know going in what we can expect.
