Robin W. says, "Will is very good with our dog Abby. She normally does not like strangers but she likes him a lot. He provides useful instruction that is easy to follow and continue with. We are not yet finished with her training, but so far she has learned better manners both inside and during walks. " Read more

I have been successfully training dogs all my life including more than tenyears with Bark Busters in the Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Cary regions. During this time I have helped hundreds of dogs overcome virtually every type of behavioral issue from basic obedience to severe aggression. The training is very Humane. No shock, prong, or choke collars. Hand are used only for petting and affection. Owners see very notabe results by the middle of the first lesson. I help owners see notable changes in their dog’s behavior partway into the very first lesson. It is very gratifying for me to see the owners enjoying seeing their pets behaving, and...

Others do not do what we do. We change your dogs behavior by changing their state of mind, much like you would teach a child what is or is not socially acceptable. We address the root of your dog's unwanted behavior(s) instead of simply changing their body position, for a more lasting, consistent correction. We teach them how to behave without being prompted by a command or a treat. I love saving animals from potentially going back to a shelter or risking euthanasia due to behavioral issues. I enjoy restoring an owner's confidence in themselves and their dog, and restoring the connection between owner and dog that may have been dwindling or l...

I first started in dogs when I turned 10 I purchased my first puppy. And fell in love with the capabilities they can provide as well as the fun and joy of having a companion! I've went from breeding, to working kennels, to a vets assistant, to even camp Bowow as a counselor keeping up to 100 @ one time! I believe dogs are just programmable machines. They have feelings, thoughts , and energy as we do. Hence "Be kool training" along with the experience I have learned to read and project the energy needed for each situation that can present itself when being a doggy parent! I am hoping to help others reach their ultimate happiness and goals wit...

I work with all shapes/sizes of dogs, and am very familiar with the special needs of rescue dogs. I've owned, fostered, and trained rescue dogs for multiple organizations. All dogs, no matter how old or whatever their previous situation can learn new things and adapt to new situations. I believe in leadership training which doesn't rely on buying good behavior with treats or forcing it through a shock collar and pain. Most people already have the skills they need, and only have to be shown how to apply them in a way their dog understands. I love helping dogs stay in their homes and achieve better relationships with their humans. Training dogs...

Your Dog Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much are dog training prices near me?

Professional dog training costs $30 to $50 per group class and $45 to $120 per private session. Dog obedience training schools cost $200 to $600 per week, and boot camp kennel training costs $500 to $1,250 per week. Get exact prices by contacting affordable dog trainers near you.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Local dog trainers teach dogs basic obedience, behavioral modification, agility, personal protection or guarding, emotional support, therapy or service dog training, show dog handling, puppy training, trick training, hunting training, police dog or K9 training, and other types.

Certified dog trainers offer group classes, private lessons, or come to your home for one-on-one training. The best in-home dog trainers also teach the owner how to train commands, use body language, and offer proper reinforcement guidance. Many dog trainers use positive reinforcement, which uses a reward (treats, praise, toys) for desired behaviors.

What is the best age to train a dog?

Puppies 7 to 8 weeks of age begin to learn basic obedience commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “stand,” and “down.” Professional dog training traditionally starts at 6 months old. By delaying training, behavioral patterns learned during puppyhood likely take longer to change.

Can you train an old dog?

Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks! Dogs can learn and be trained at any age. Older dogs have more self-control and are easier to train than young puppies. Continuing to train your dog as it matures is also important to help keep their mind sharp.

Is paying for private dog training worth it?

Private dog training helps correct your dog’s behavior, aggression, anxiety, socialization skills, and teaches them a commands list in a timely and cost-effective manner. Common commands dogs learn quickly are to stay, heel, and roll over.

Professional dog training is valuable because it teaches your dog not to jump or bite, to stop barking, to stay in the yard off-leash, potty training, to use a dog door, not to pull on a leash, hand signals, and much more.

Which dog breeds are easy to train?

The easiest dog breeds to train are an Australian Shepherd, Corgi, Bearded or Border Collie, Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and a Doberman Pinscher. Female canines of all breeds are also easier to train and housebreak.

Which dog breeds are hard to train?

The hardest dogs breeds to train are a Husky, Mastiff, Pug, Beagle, Bulldog, Weimaraner, Afghan Hound, Basenji, Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, Fox and Kerry Blue Terrier, Irish Setter, Pekingese, Pit Bull Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, and a Rottweiler.

Reviews for Durham dog trainers

Jessica W.
Just wonderful. Really listens to what your goals are for your dog. Super patient and knowledgeable. Always asked if I was comfortable with using various traing tools (I expressed I did not want to have my dog wearing a shock collar ) Even worked with my teenage son to get him more confident and comfortable with our dog, he even made my son videos to refer to. Has a open phone policy so you can call or text any questions or concerns between sessions. All around just great and could not be more pleased!
