Your Tankless Water Heater Repair questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does tankless water heater repair cost?

Tankless water heater repair costs can vary depending on the issue and the extent of the repair required. One of the most common maintenance tasks for tankless water heaters is a routine flush and descaling, which typically costs between $150 and $350. This process involves flushing out any sediment buildup and removing mineral deposits that can accumulate over time, ensuring efficient and reliable operation.

In addition to routine maintenance, other common repairs for tankless water heaters may include replacing faulty components such as the ignition assembly, gas valve, or control board. These repairs can range from $200 to $800 or more, depending on the specific part and labor costs. If the entire unit needs to be replaced, the cost to install a tankless water heater can range from $1,400 to $5,600.

Who can repair a tankless water heater?

Most tankless water heater repairs require the expertise of a licensed and experienced professional plumber. These units are complex systems that heat water on demand without storing it, making repairs more intricate than traditional tank water heaters.

Manufacturers also typically recommend using certified technicians familiar with their specific tankless models for major repairs or part replacements to ensure proper operation and maintain warranties. Attempting complex DIY repairs on tankless water heaters can lead to safety hazards like gas leaks, electrical issues, or further damage to the unit.

How long does it take to repair a tankless water heater?

The time it takes to repair a tankless water heater can vary significantly depending on the specific issue and the complexity of the repair required. Minor repairs like resetting a tripped circuit breaker, descaling for minor mineral buildup, or adjusting temperature settings take 1 to 2 hours. More moderate repairs like replacing faulty parts or repairing a leak can take 2 to 4 hours.

The most major repairs like replacing the entire heat exchanger assembly or repairing major electrical or gas line issues can take longer than 4 hours. The actual repair times can be longer or shorter depending on the technician’s experience, the accessibility of the unit, and any unforeseen complications that arise during the repair.

How long does a tankless water heater last?

Tankless water heaters typically have a longer lifespan compared to traditional tank-style water heaters. On average, a well-maintained tankless water heater can last anywhere from 15 to 20 years. Proper installation, regular maintenance (such as annual flushing and descaling), and water quality can greatly impact the lifespan of a tankless water heater.

Factors like hard water or mineral buildup can shorten the unit's life, while soft water and consistent maintenance can help extend it. Ultimately, with proper care and ideal conditions, a high-quality tankless water heater can provide reliable hot water for up to 20 years or more.

How do I choose a tankless water heater repair service?

When choosing a tankless water heater repair service, it's important to consider the following factors:

  • Look for a company that specializes in tankless water heater repairs and has extensive experience in this field.
  • Check if the company is licensed, insured, and certified by the manufacturer to work on the specific brand and model of your tankless water heater.
  • Research online reviews on HomeGuide and Google. Also, check out testimonials from previous customers to gauge their level of satisfaction with the service provided.
  • Ask for references and contact them to get firsthand accounts of their experiences.
  • Compare pricing and service packages from multiple providers to ensure you're getting a fair and transparent quote.
  • While cost should not be the sole deciding factor, it's important to find a balance between quality service and reasonable pricing.

What questions should I ask a tankless water heater repair service?

Ask these important questions when hiring a tankless water heater repair service:

  • How long have you been in business, and how much experience do you have specifically with repairing tankless water heaters?
  • Do you have technicians trained and certified to work on my specific brand and model of tankless water heater?
  • Are your technicians licensed, bonded, and insured to perform tankless water heater repairs in my area?
  • Do you offer any warranties or guarantees on your repair work?
  • Do you stock common replacement parts for tankless water heaters, or will you need to order parts, potentially delaying the repair?
  • Can you provide an estimate for the repair cost, including parts and labor?
  • Do you offer routine maintenance services like flushing and descaling to help extend the life of my tankless unit?
  • What are your typical response times for service calls?
  • Do you offer emergency or same-day service if my tankless unit stops working?
  • Can you provide references, or can I check online reviews to gauge your reputation for quality workmanship and customer satisfaction?

I called Mr. Diller and he asked what was my problems with my plumbing. I told him what was happening and he told me what he would do to rectify the problem. He gave me a quote along with a 90 day guarantee. He told me what time he would be here and was here within 15 minutes of that time.He came into the residence in a professional manner and did the job likewise . He did not ask for any more than he told me it would cost. He gave me recommendations for future issues as wells as quote for that. I would recommend him to any and all that have plumbing issues. Bill and his partner did an awesome job. Thanks again Mr. Diller.

I had a very positive experience with Quality HVAC solutions. Since my initial call, I felt that the person that answered my call was knowledgeable and knew what they were talking about. They went to my house and found the problem right away(my a/c was built in the 70s and had seen it's better days already, apparently a/c's are not even made in that shape anymore) the service person gave me a couple of options and I went with the one I felt comfortable with, they made some suggestions but they weren't pushy or anything during any part of the process. A couple of days later they were able to send what they called an "install team" that arrived and began work right away. The team was very courteous and professional and you could tell they've been doing this for a while. They initially arrived with a smaller a/c than we had agreed on but it was sorted out right away with a phone call. They finished installing and even took the old a/c and all the old pieces too. We're very happy with the work Quality HVAC did for us.
