Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Our typical process starts with HomeGuide. We communicate through via the app first. Then, I set up an apointment with client to come out and discuss your ideas, evaluate the work to be completed, and areas that need dust/debris protection. We collect direct contact information and put together an written estimate. Then once estimate is approved by client, a deposit and signature is required. Then set up starting date and time. Time frame is stated on estimate, and descriptive email. Complete work finalize invoice. 1 year warranty for all work.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over 30 plus years of hands on construction experience. And I also have an Associates in Business. Which combined with the hands-on experience allows us to provide the highest quality of craftsmanship, with the ability to communicate the scope of work in detail with any level of clientele professionally.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
We work with each client differently, however base labor rate is $65 per man for miscellaneous handyman work. This rate includes labor, equipment, and Contractor Insurance. In some cases, such as kitchen/bath, or complete renovation projects work requires linear or square footage pricing. Which will be explained and negotiated during the estimate process. All estimates are obligation free.
How did you get started in this business?
I got my start as a mason labor during my sophomore summer break. Where I found that I liked working with my hands and also liked having the option of working both indoors or outdoors. As a mason labor, I was able to learn the other trades. Here are a few; rough/finish carpentry, drywall hanging/finishing, painting, plumbing, and tile.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We have worked with all levels of experienced clients. Ranging from new homeowners to experienced Real Estate Investors. I have the ability to work with clients that require a strict schedules to clients who are flexible. I am open and flexible enough to work with most schedules.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Prior to the Christmas holiday of 2018, I had the privilege of installing new engineered laminate wood flooring, base moulding throughout the whole first floor. It was approximately 1200 sq ft. We created a mudroom, installed wainscotting, built a bench w/shoe cubbies, and installed a cabinet with butcher block top. In the kitchen we installed granite countertop, marble backsplash, new floor also. I built a new 54 inch island with a butchers block top. Why I am fond of this project. We were able to provide a mother/widow of 3 children. Who lost her husband 5 years ago, and was left with a half rehabbed house, that turned into a storage dump for anything and everything for 5 years. And I could go on, but just picture hoarding. The children all went away to college to escape living in these conditions, after endless attempts from the children to help clean up and finish some of the projects that were started to make the home liveable. The oldest finished school and hasn't come home since. The other two children stay away as much as possible. And they haven't celebrated any holidays together or with others for 5 years. It was emotional for all us, trying to separate owner from belongings. I worked diligently and compassionately with her and ultimately after 58 days. We were able to bring the family home to mom for Christmas.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Make sure that you understand the proposal that has been submitted completely. If you have any questions, clarify them before signing any contracts. Also know your budget, you do not need to disclose amount to contractor, just have an idea.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
This is the first thing to really consider, know what type of work are you looking for? Cheap and fast= poor quality? Or reasonable and consistent= good quality? From my experience, you get what you pay for. Do your research.
