Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Hot Tub and Spa Cleaning and Maintenance questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does hot tub maintenance cost?

The average cost of hot tub maintenance is $50 to $200 per month for professional service, or $10 to $30 per month for chemicals and filters if you maintain the spa yourself. Hot tub maintenance costs vary greatly depending on the location, brand and model, size, and usage frequency. In general, the more you use the hot tub, the more it'll cost to keep it clean and keep the water chemistry in balance.

  • Most hot tub service professionals charge $75 to $200 per hour, depending on the location, their level of experience, and the complexity of the job.
  • One-time hot tub cleaning service $150 to $300 on average.
  • Drain and refill service costs $150 to $400, depending on what they include in the service.

How do you maintain a hot tub?

Key hot tub maintenance steps include:

  • Testing the water chemistry 2 to 3 times weekly
  • Cleaning filters at least monthly or more if needed
  • Draining and refilling water every 3 to 4 months
  • Cleaning the cover monthly and as needed
  • Inspecting equipment quarterly or more frequently if needed

The exact frequency of maintenance a hot tub needs varies depends on several factors, such as how often you use it and the local climate and weather conditions.

How long do hot tubs last?

Hot tubs last anywhere from 5 to 20 years, depending on the location, model, usage, and care. Quality hot tubs last 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. Premium brands can last 15 to 20 years, while budget models typically last 5 to 8 years. Key factors affecting lifespan include:

  • Maintenance consistency
  • Water chemistry balance
  • Climate exposure
  • Usage frequency
  • Build quality

Do hot tubs use a lot of electricity?

Yes, some hot tubs use a lot of electricity. Most hot tubs use 1,500 to 6,000 watts of electricity each month, adding $20 to $60 or more to monthly electric bills. Energy-efficient models with good insulation and quality covers can reduce consumption by 30% to 40%. Running costs also vary by climate, usage, and local electricity rates.

How do I choose a hot tub cleaning service near me?

Follow these guidelines to help you choose an experienced hot tub service professional:

  • Compare several estimates from reputable spa service professionals.
  • Check out reviews of their previous work on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Avoid going with the lowest estimates that may indicate lack of experience or poor quality work.
  • Request a detailed contract and warranty in writing before any work begins.

What questions should I ask when hiring a hot tub maintenance service?

When searching for hot tub maintenance services near you, be sure to ask these important questions to find a qualified service company you can trust to maintain your spa:

  • Is the company licensed, bonded, and insured?
  • Can you provide a list of previous customers I can contact for their feedback?
  • What hours are you available to perform hot tub maintenance?
  • How often does my hot tub need maintenance?
  • What exactly do you include in the maintenance service?
  • What additional costs might come up during a maintenance visit?
  • Do you offer a discount if I purchase an annual maintenance plan?
