GM says, "Andre and Renata run a small but great construction company. Andre has plenty of experience across multiple fields and can execute on any projects with a crew of very talented carpenters and technicians; Renata is very organized and help clients navigate the complexity of remodeling project. Andre and Renata re-finished our basement and remodeled a bathroom, in our home in Georgetown . They did a quality job. What I really appreciated about them is their willingness to provide a quality service at a fair price but most importantly a genuine interest in getting things right and make their clients happy. I hired them for other small projects after and I would definitely hire them again." Read more

Your Kitchen Remodel questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

A kitchen remodel costs $100 to $250 per square foot or from $12,800 to $21,200 total on average. The cost of kitchen renovation depends on the size of the area, the quality of materials and appliances, and if the layout or location of plumbing changes.

Remodeling a kitchen takes 4 to 8 weeks on average. Custom kitchen renovation projects that include structural changes, removing or moving walls, or changing the floor plan take up to 12 weeks to finish.

Kitchen remodeling companies may install new appliances, a sink, countertops, cabinets, flooring, fixtures, an island, lighting, and painting the walls. Custom kitchen remodeling contractors can change the floor plan, knock down walls, and move plumbing and fixtures to a new location.

Here are the steps to start your kitchen remodeling project:

  1. Set a budget.
  2. Determine the layout and where everything will go.
  3. Once everything is in place, decide on the materials, appliances, colors, and overall kitchen design.
  4. If you are unsure of what you want, consider hiring a kitchen designer.
  5. Next, research and contact multiple kitchen remodelers in your area.
  6. Compare at least three free estimates, verify their licensing and insurance, ask questions, check out their reviews, and hire the best contractor.

To save money on kitchen remodeling, be sure to:

  • Avoid changing the floor plan and moving the existing plumbing or electrical.
  • Consider resurfacing or repainting the kitchen cabinets instead of installing new ones.
  • Complete the kitchen renovation in stages to save on upfront costs.
  • Get at least three estimates from kitchen and bath remodelers in your area to find the best price.

A kitchen remodel increases home value with a 60% to 80% return on investment (ROI) when you sell your home. Small kitchen renovations tend to provide a higher ROI than large upscale remodels.

Start by searching our list of kitchen remodeling companies near you. After researching and contacting potential candidates:

  • Get at least three in-person house renovation quotes to compare.
  • Verify their license, insurance, worker’s compensation, and bond guarantees.
  • Read reviews and check out their previous work on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Ask what remodeling services they specialize in or provide.
  • Ask about their warranties and guarantees.
  • Ask for a full itemized contract in writing in case of a dispute.
  • Discuss scheduling and how long the project will take
  • Avoid making large payments upfront. Come up with a payment schedule for work completed.

When looking for kitchen contractors near you, ask them the following questions:

  • How long have you been in the kitchen and bath remodeling business?
  • How many similar projects have you completed?
  • What do your services include?
  • Can I see a portfolio of your past remodeling jobs?
  • Do you offer kitchen design services or 3D modeling?
  • Can you provide me with references?
  • Are you licensed, insured, and bonded?
  • Who's the project manager, and will you use subcontractors?
  • How do you handle damages that happen on the job?
  • What qualities do you look for in subcontractors?
  • What hours do you and your crew work?
  • What permits do I need, and will you obtain them?
  • When can you start, and when will you finish?
  • What does your warranty policy include?
  • What is your policy for change orders?
  • Can you provide me a written estimate or contract with a breakdown of all costs?
  • What’s your payment schedule?
  • What do I need to provide to get started?

Emington and his crew with Home Improvement were a pleasure to work with. And I want to start off by saying this house was in very bad shape. It might have been easier to knock this house down and rebuild. Home Improvement were professional with respect for the persons living in the house and neighbors that surrounded the area. Ermington’s crew works as a unit. The first time we met, Home Improvement gave me an estimate and the second time we met we discussed the details of the estimate. I was absolutely positive this house didn’t need a new roof. I couldn’t have been more wrong. In a blink of an eye the 4 men who came with Emington were grabbing their ladders and were now in the attic and on the roof of my house. As we talked Emington’s crew was sending him photos of the attic and roof damage. As we moved forward, I was blissfully unaware of what I wanted in colors and styles. Emington told me to drive around the neighborhood and look at siding and roof colors. Extremely good advice. I told him what I saw and from there he suggested what colors would complement each other. His crew replaced the roof first. There was no screaming or cross talking from the crew for the roof replacement. The siding was next. Same crew, same results. Excellent work and respectful. I noticed they paid attention to splices with the siding. Everything looked even with no gaps. The windows were next along with the air conditioning. The perfect plan was to bring each company to me for each project. Pella came in for the windows and showed me styles, designs, etc.… I never had to run around looking for what I wanted. There was no sales pitch and no one talked me into an upgrade. This also applied to the air conditioning. There was a timeline but because I worked in an environment where my clients always need a ship date, I was already prepared for delays and wrong products. I can assure you mistakes will happen to delay projects that are totally out of the contractor’s hands. But with Home Improvement, Emington took control and followed up on the issue right away. He would send me emails and updates. This was very much appreciated. There was also an emergency with my family and we had to put the entire project on hold for 30 days. Emington understood and he never gave me a hard time nor did he up charge me for lost time. Home Improvement and Emington and crew were very easy to work with. If I wanted to make a change, they would tell me honestly if that change would affect another room or if the cost was so far out of range I would decline. The crew was polite respectful, no cussing and they cleaned up after themselves. Emington’s crew also did little things to help us out. Took the battered trash cans and got rid of them for us, accepted delivers and so on. These things add up and, in the end, saves you time. At the moment, I decided to hire Emington and crew from Home Improvement to build a screened in back porch. My decision was based on his work and the art of his craft. I highly recommend Home Improvement as one of the best contractors I have ever worked with. This was not my first rodeo with a construction company to turn a house into home. This site was the first time I worked with a structure in ruin and Home Improvements turned it into a home. My highest recommendations go to Home Improvement, Emington and Crew. Emma Fox

Very professional. I had to get a kitchen counter remodeled quickly between closing and moving in to not disrupt my family. Tes Design was able to source the material and perform the installation in 2 days and did an excellent job for a very fair price. I'd call them again for a future project.

The whole Traylor team was top-notch. Andre came out to personally go through the estimate and was here constantly to check on the project. After receiving 7 different proposals for our house project we decided to go with Traylor. They were licensed, competitively priced and responsive. They painted our entire house and completely remodeled my entire office. The team worked efficiently and when I made suggestions along the way, they were accommodating. I was fearful that the timeline would be extended but indeed, they finished at the agreed-upon date and at the agreed-upon price. We will definitely be using them again to remodel our kitchen, bathrooms, and basement.

I just wanted to extend my sincerest satisfaction to your company. From the beginning, your manager John provided an awesome demonstration of the quality windows you provide. The Capital Remodeling Inc. installers were superb and very prompt. They installed 8 windows in my residence on time and the quality of the workmanship they provided significantly enhanced my house. Lastly, the follow up courtesy call was very considerate and helpful. She ensured I had no issues with any aspect of the job and the quality of the windows. Again, please accept my deepest appreciation for a job well done to your employees. Great job Capital Remodeling Inc.
