Jordan G. says, "ARRK handyman Service was hired by my company to put a 150ft wood fence in the backyard of our rental property with two gates in order to create privacy from the railroad tracks directly behind the property. Russell and his crew showed up ready to work in the middle of a snow storm when they live an hour and a half away. They had to cut down gigantic tree in order to install the fence on very uneven ground. The final product turned out beautifully! He did a wonderful job in regards to the work. However, I had to subtract one star for poor communication and follow thru. I had asked Russell to complete the project within a 3 day time span and to also stay in contact with me every morning with updates. The project ended up taking a full 2 weeks to complete and I was only contact one time with an update. He also put the front gate in an awkward spot, not where I had planned for it to go. In the end, The quality of work was so stunning that some of these other issues fell to the wayside. We would most definitely work with Russell and Arrk Handyman Services again!" Read more

Your Ceiling Contractors questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much does it cost to install a ceiling?

Ceiling installation costs $2 to $40 per square foot on average, depending on the ceiling type and material. A 12'x12' ceiling costs $290 to $2,900 installed.

What is the easiest ceiling to install?

The easiest type of ceiling to install is a drop ceiling. Flat, standard drywall is the cheapest ceiling type, but drywall is heavier, messier, and harder to install than drop ceiling panels.

How long does it take to install or replace a ceiling?

A ceiling takes 1 to 3 days to install or replace, depending on the type. Drop ceilings take less time to install than other types. If you will be doing any demolition or vaulting, the project will take longer than average.

How long do ceilings last?

A standard drywall ceiling lasts 30 to 75 years if you take care of it. However, you might need to repair or replace it if you notice any of the following:

  • Cracks
  • Bubbling
  • Water damage
  • Sagging
  • Mold

Do you need a permit to install a ceiling?

Most building projects require a permit, especially when it involves structural changes, electrical work, or plumbing work. Always check local code regulations before starting a major project. Many contractors will pull the necessary permits for you.

Can you drywall over a popcorn or plaster ceiling?

Yes, you can drywall over a popcorn or plaster ceiling. This technique will lower your ceiling by about an inch but save you time and money compared to replacing the ceiling or removing popcorn. Other options for covering an old ceiling include wood planks or decorative tiles made of metal or PVC.

How do I hire a ceiling contractor?

Search our list of ceiling contractors, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Examine reviews and pictures on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Choose a licensed, bonded, and experienced company.
  • Verify their insurance and warranty.
  • Before any work starts, get a written estimate, contract, and warranty.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making a large payment up front.

What questions should I ask ceiling installers?

Find the best ceiling installer by asking the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
  • What material would you recommend for my ceiling?
  • How do you handle any damage that might happen on the job?
  • How long will the installation take?
  • Could you perform an inspection and recommend repairs if necessary?
  • Do you offer a warranty for your work? What does it cover?
  • Can you give me an estimate and contract in writing?
