Tim M. says, "Undeniably a wonderful experience and teaching from Matt. He was punctual, informative and answered all our questions. He was calm but firm with our dog, Mimo. His demeanor was in sync with our anxious, newly rescued dog. He also demonstrated how to recognize and handle anxious behavior that in a few days Mimo has made great progress and now we understand how to move forward. He also gave us techniques to help increase the trust and bonding between Mimo and us. After we use our new knowledge and approaches, we hope to schedule a followup session with Matt and continue to make progress with Mimo in her forever home. Matt is the real deal and we highly recommend him." Read more

Howard G. says, "I am writing this letter to inform you of the useful and enlightening experience I had in your novice dog obedience class. Many times obedience classes are watered down, common sense, and not always applicable or useful in everyday situations. I found your course to be all encompassing, covering many areas I wished to improve, and filled with additional useful information I never even considered regarding my dog. Kudos to your articulate and professional teacher, Wendy Brookhyser, who not only took the time to make sure every dog and handler knew the material; also demonstrating it with her own two dogs she brought to class. It was a powerful motivator to see an instructor who not only "talked the talk" but "walked the walk" with her own two perfectly mannered dogs. Being in the educational system, I have found that the teacher makes the difference in any class; in other words, great material means nothing if it is not presented correctly. Wendy is the epitome of a conscientious and concerned instructor, right away, she began the class with useful information; all the while demonstrating each maneuver until each person in the class completely understood what was being taught. It is that "something extra" that Wendy puts in all she does, wanting all her students to excel, and that is what makes her rise above others in her field. I can truly say every dog and handler in our class made tremendous improvements in obedience training, including my own dog, Mina. I started Wendy's class with my out-of-control puppy, who barked incessantly, pulled on the leash, was aggressive toward others, etc., not the kind of dog you could take to public places. As each week in the class progressed, I saw a steady improvement in my dog, with her learning to walk on a leash, sit, stay, come, lay down, and many other basic commands I never even dreamed my dog could ever handle. In the end I was sad to have the class end, but at the same time, I was so happy to see the improvement in my dog, Mina, who now is an obedient and well-trained dog that I can take anywhere, thanks only to Wendy and your class. I just want you to know that I will always recommend Wendy and your class to all the pet owners I meet in the future." Read more

Your Dog Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much are dog training prices near me?

Professional dog training costs $30 to $50 per group class and $45 to $120 per private session. Dog obedience training schools cost $200 to $600 per week, and boot camp kennel training costs $500 to $1,250 per week. Get exact prices by contacting affordable dog trainers near you.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Local dog trainers teach dogs basic obedience, behavioral modification, agility, personal protection or guarding, emotional support, therapy or service dog training, show dog handling, puppy training, trick training, hunting training, police dog or K9 training, and other types.

Certified dog trainers offer group classes, private lessons, or come to your home for one-on-one training. The best in-home dog trainers also teach the owner how to train commands, use body language, and offer proper reinforcement guidance. Many dog trainers use positive reinforcement, which uses a reward (treats, praise, toys) for desired behaviors.

What is the best age to train a dog?

Puppies 7 to 8 weeks of age begin to learn basic obedience commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “stand,” and “down.” Professional dog training traditionally starts at 6 months old. By delaying training, behavioral patterns learned during puppyhood likely take longer to change.

Can you train an old dog?

Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks! Dogs can learn and be trained at any age. Older dogs have more self-control and are easier to train than young puppies. Continuing to train your dog as it matures is also important to help keep their mind sharp.

Is paying for private dog training worth it?

Private dog training helps correct your dog’s behavior, aggression, anxiety, socialization skills, and teaches them a commands list in a timely and cost-effective manner. Common commands dogs learn quickly are to stay, heel, and roll over.

Professional dog training is valuable because it teaches your dog not to jump or bite, to stop barking, to stay in the yard off-leash, potty training, to use a dog door, not to pull on a leash, hand signals, and much more.

Which dog breeds are easy to train?

The easiest dog breeds to train are an Australian Shepherd, Corgi, Bearded or Border Collie, Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and a Doberman Pinscher. Female canines of all breeds are also easier to train and housebreak.

Which dog breeds are hard to train?

The hardest dogs breeds to train are a Husky, Mastiff, Pug, Beagle, Bulldog, Weimaraner, Afghan Hound, Basenji, Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, Fox and Kerry Blue Terrier, Irish Setter, Pekingese, Pit Bull Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, and a Rottweiler.

Ken is training ME so I can be a better pet mom to our dog. His teaching is giving me more confidence with a 90+ lb. dog who is learning who is in charge. His methods are simple but effective. Thank you, Ken.

We neglected to thank you at the conclusion of last Saturday's obedience Crash Course, which, as it turns out, was a vital part of our Mallory's education in learning fundamental rules of behavior, attentiveness, and respect for commands and directives. We discovered quickly that Mallory learns fast and easily, that she rather enjoyed her homework assignments, and that she was receptive to both praise and correction. We also discovered that she seemed to be continually unable to resist the presence of another dog, which signaled (to her, at any rate) an opportunity to run, chase, play and pester. Under your guidance, we have come a long way, so that she now sits and stays properly until she is given clear verbal permission to engage her various pup pals. After the first session, when we were convinced that we might have the class dunce living with us, we worked every day with her (sometimes for a total of two hours) and we incorporated your recommendations and techniques. We hope that you agree with us that by the time of the fourth class Mallory had improved tremendously. We appreciate your efforts and the care with which you teach canines and their folks. Thank you again.
