What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My name is Brandy Eggeman and I am the owner and operator of Citizen K9 Dog Training & Agility LLC as well as the Director of the canine facility for Hero Kids Foundation. I grew up with German Shepherds and my mom owns a kennel where she raises German Shepherds. I have over 30 years of experience in dog training with various breeds, with 17 years in search and rescue work for the state of Virginia and 2 years in England with Dartmoor Mountain Rescue. I am the only trainer that does search and rescue that has state certification with Virginia Department of Emergency Management that trains within the Hampton Roads area. Having worked with law enforcement and many officials over the years in various venues, the quality of my training must meet the highest standards. My dogs have to meet the highest standards of training as well. Always do checking on individuals who claim to do this type of work as well as with state and local law enforcement and search agencies.

I train using positive reinforcement because I believe dogs learn best with this method and it strengthens your bond with your family member. I also believe there is a consequence for undesirable behavior. I use the analogy of being ticketed for speeding in your vehicle......it doesn’t hurt but makes you think twice before doing it again!

I have shown dogs in obedience, trained therapy dogs and work dogs in Schutzhund, along with having trained pet quality dogs for the past 9 years. I also work with Virginia German Shepherd Rescue in the rehabilitation of dogs with behavioral issues so that they can be adopted out as lifelong quality family members. I am also a published author of a training book. With 30 years of experience in many aspects of dog training, it would be my pleasure to put my extensive experience to work for you!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?

Understanding that this is not like a car that you need brakes fixed. You go pick up and it is fixed.

These are animals and they take time, consitency and training from both OWNER and Trainer. Depending on issues or problems, that dog may have been doing that behavior for years. It is not going to get fixed overnight. It takes lots of training to fix. Even if only doing problem for 5 months. Much shorter time, but still have to fix they have to change behaviors. I explain it to people like this. If you live in the same house for years, you know where everything is. So someone comes in and moves things around, it will frustrate you etc. but if I put a $20 by everything I move, that makes it worth your time and you are rewarded for the change. Now say you get up and move to a new place, now you have to go change where everything was kept, come up with new routines etc. It is the same with dogs.
