Half Day Service - $250.00

Full Day Service $500.00

If your piano seems difficult to play, has uneven touch, doesn't sound as nice as you wish it did, there is a very good chance it can be improved, often substantially.

Many pianos are not operating as efficiently as they were originally designed to. People often do not realize that a piano, in addition to being an expressive instrument, is also a machine with ten thousand moving parts.

These parts largely consist of felt and wood and other non-stable materials that wear, compress and shrink/swell with humidity changes seasonally.

Given time, all pianos will gradually drift away from proper performance.

The performance of a piano action tends to decline, due to the compression of felt, warping of wood, and other types of wear. Andy's Piano Service can skillfully restore it to optimal precision, in a process called regulation, which involves many adjustments.

New pianos are not perfectly regulated when released from the factory, or quickly lose their regulation when moved to their new home, and will benefit from regulation in the home.

The goal of regulation is to make the piano's touch and sound consistent across all notes, allow it to comfortably achieve the widest possible range of dynamics, and make the keys responsive to even the most rapid or most subtle motions of the player.

A half day or full day service appointment is the only way to make a significant improvement in your instrument.

Piano Tuning

I recommend that a piano be tuned every six months, or at least once each year. The piano is primarily made of wood and is affected by climate change: wood swells and contracts with variations in humidity and temperature, resulting in a change of string tension, changing the "tuning."

Optimal tone quality will be maintained when it is tuned on a consistent basis. When a number of years pass between tunings, the pitch will drop, often enough that two or more tunings will be needed to restore the pitch to A-440.

I bring the pitch back up to normal over the course of several tunings, particularly when it has dropped a step or more. Raising the pitch too far in one tuning may result in broken strings making it is impossible to do a quality tuning, as the pitch will slip until the strings stabilize.

I will be glad to work with you in setting up a schedule. I keep a record of each tuning appointment and will contact you after one year has passed.

Tuning cost (in the Lynchburg area) is $95.00 and $45.00 for a pitch raise.

Piano Regulation

Regulation is the process of optimizing the piano action (the wippen assembly, hammers- shanks and flanges immediately above the keys within the piano cavity) to provide the best response to our touch. In a sense regulation is the optimization of touch and tone. A piano that is out of proper regulation can have sluggish repetition, uneven or irregular tone or touch, feel heavy and exhibit an inability to play gently or softly. A fine regulation will result in an even touch whereby the piano keys and action respond in a like manner throughout. Power and control are restored.

We use words like aftertouch to describe the sensation toward the end of the keystroke which coincides with the moment of sound. Aftertouch provides a comfortable touch sensation for pianists, a physical zone for parts rotation, travel completion and repetition of each note. Hammer voicing in conjunction with regulation improves tone and timbre (tone color) in this process.

The regulation procedure includes inspection, repair and cleaning of the piano keyframe, keybed and action. Necessary repairs are made, friction is measured and reduced as needed followed by adjustments of key height, dip and level, key travel and spacing, hammer shaping, alignment, spacing and travel, all major action alignments, timing and parts synchronization, repetition spring and repetition lever adjustments and a host of other fine alignment and related adjustments.

Regulation improves touch , tone and responsiveness of the piano and provides the basis for a expression, a wide dynamic range and power.

I enjoy the happy smiles of my customers when they play their piano tuned by me.

A good friend of mine recommended Andy one day when I was searching in vain for a piano tuner in my area. It was my lucky day, since she not only had the recommendation, but Andy scheduled to tune her piano later that day! I asked her to give Andy my phone number to call me about possibly coming over after his work on her piano, or scheduling an appointment for another day. Andy was kind enough not only to call me, but to come over that evening to tackle my Chickering grand piano that hadnt been tuned for over twenty years, and had numerous other problems like sticky keys, detached pedals, etc. Andy patiently and skillfully spent four hours that evening bringing my valuable piano back to life, and made the drive back across the mountain the next day to fix the pedals so my sister would have the pleasure of playing a new and improved piano when she arrived the following day to house-sit for three weeks. Furthermore, the cost of all this work was incredibly reasonable. I completely agree with all the rave reviews on this site, and feel so fortunate to have found a piano tuner and restorer who clearly loves his craft and providing amazing service for his piano owners! Now that weve found Andy, we plan to have him return at least once a year to keep our grand piano in the excellent condition it deserves, and are now inspired to start playing it again on a regular basis.
