Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I ask prospective clients to look at my portfolio and determine if they think our styles would work well together, and read the sections on the services I offer (full service hourly design, or e design packages).
They can then submit a request through the contact page of my website. We will discuss the project through email, and set up an initial meeting to discuss their wants and needs, budget, and determine if we want to work together.
After that, if we both want to go ahead, I provide clients with a proposal and contract which they can review and sign when they are ready to proceed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an associates degree in interior design and over 6 years working in the industry.
As well as designing for clients and running my own business, I have project managed for the television show 'Extreme Makeover Home Edition' on an 11,000 sq ft build in Baltimore, MD.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
E designs are prices as packages, which are shown on my website.
Full service design is billed at an hourly rate and is dependent on the scope of your project. The initial proposal will give a good idea to how many design hours I expect a design to take.
Purchasing services are at a cost plus rate detailed in the contract.
How did you get started in this business?
After moving to the USA from Britain in 2006, I went back to school to study design - something I had always been interested in, but not had the opportunity to pursue. My previous degree is in journalism.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Many kinds! From single women and men, to couples with dogs, to families with young kids and those with adult children and retired couples. Everyone deserves good design!
Describe a recent project you are fond of.
I am currently working on a second home project for a previous client who is moving to and 1800s home in Old Town Alexandria. As a Brit, old homes and small spaces are hugely exciting to me, and I love being part of the process of restoring a home to it's full potential.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Choose a designer who's style you love, and who you click with. A good designer will be able to work in most styles, but you want them to love your project and resonate with you.
You probably would not get a haircut from a stylist who was known for creating styles totally different to what you are looking for - your home is no different.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
What is your budget? Be realistic - a designer will use your budget to it's full potential, and save you money wherever possible. Don't shortchange yourself by telling them it's less than it really is.
How long are you staying in your home? What are your goals?
