Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When working with a new customer, I do my best to assess their needs in a free consultation, ensure that I am the right choice for their family and their dog, and help them select the right program to get the results they want. The client is able to get to know me through this process, and I am able to learn more about their specific situation and their dog's needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over 5 years of professional experience training dogs. I have worked with hundreds of different dogs, owners from all backgrounds and situations, and just about every breed, size, and temperament of dog.
How did you get started in this business?
In 2010, I started researching dogs and soon found my best friend Pepper. Pepper is a mix black Lab and Golden retriever. Ever since the day I picked her up I have been learning the art of dog training. As the process furthered, I soon began to get noticed for the impeccable obedience and talent Pepper had. Due to this, I very quickly was constantly surrounded by 3-4 dogs of friends, family and neighbors who all wanted me to train their dogs to be like Pepper. Out of my love for the animals I started taking them on long hikes in the mountains every day and training as I did so.
My work with those dogs was so successful that soon more friends of friends would bring their dogs to me and ask me to train their dogs to be like these others. This all snowballed into something that was taking all my time. I decided to switch this to my full time job in order to most effectively fulfill all the needs of my clients and training of their dogs.
Since this time I have sought countless hours of dog training for top professionals in the industry. I have proven my skills over and over again with multiple dogs of different sizes, breeds, energy level, and education level. With every new dog brings a new experience and I guarantee my work to be satisfying for all my clients.
What types of customers have you worked with?
The most common training clients I have deal with dogs that jump on people, dash through doors, go crazy when the doorbell rings, pull on the leash, lunge and bark on lead at strange dogs, bikes, strollers and people, have potty training problems, are fear aggressive or anxious when their families leave. I deal with all situations and will assess what is needed in the free consultation.
I have begun our hunting program which trains dogs to hunt as well. This helps dogs grow into that hunting companion you’ve always wanted.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
When hiring a dog trainer, there's a LOT to consider. Be sure to ask a trainer you are thinking of hiring specific questions about their methods, what you can realistically expect, and the environment your dog will be staying in. If you are seeking a board and train program, be sure to ask specific questions about the conditions your dog will live in, how frequently they will be trained, and where they spend their time while not being trained. Many board and train facilities keep dogs in kennel runs and only take them out to train, which I firmly believe is the wrong way to deal with family pets. I believe that dogs who will be living in a family environment should be trained in one!
When looking for a dog trainer, you should understand that dog trainers do not have a one-size-fits-all certification process, or any standardization within the industry when it comes to required education. This can make it harder to select a dog trainer, as the main qualification for being a great dog trainer is experience!
