Chris V. says, "Andie did an excellent job helping us with our “very” stubborn ridgeback puppy. Andie is always prepared, always very calm and always in control. She works on training both puppy and humans, which we also needed. Our puppy has made great progress in the very short time Andie has been with us. My wife and I highly recommend Andie services. Well worth our time and effort and all of Andie’s training and time with us in our own home has definitely paid off! Give Andie a call. I assure you she can help with your dog training." Read more

There are many dog training professionals out there, and they all seem to have their own thoughts on each subject. I know because I read all their books when I was young. I'm Master Dog Trainer Chris Williams. I've spent the better part of a decade studying the canine mind, have compiled over 14,000 hours of study, and what I found was astonishing. As it turns out, dogs do indeed have a system of communication, that you can learn. Once I figured out how dogs were communicating, and what they were saying, the rest was relatively easy! Now I travel the country, teaching people how to understand their dog's behavior, and master it. All withou

Your Dog Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on HomeGuide.

How much are dog training prices near me?

Professional dog training costs $30 to $50 per group class and $45 to $120 per private session. Dog obedience training schools cost $200 to $600 per week, and boot camp kennel training costs $500 to $1,250 per week. Get exact prices by contacting affordable dog trainers near you.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Local dog trainers teach dogs basic obedience, behavioral modification, agility, personal protection or guarding, emotional support, therapy or service dog training, show dog handling, puppy training, trick training, hunting training, police dog or K9 training, and other types.

Certified dog trainers offer group classes, private lessons, or come to your home for one-on-one training. The best in-home dog trainers also teach the owner how to train commands, use body language, and offer proper reinforcement guidance. Many dog trainers use positive reinforcement, which uses a reward (treats, praise, toys) for desired behaviors.

What is the best age to train a dog?

Puppies 7 to 8 weeks of age begin to learn basic obedience commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “stand,” and “down.” Professional dog training traditionally starts at 6 months old. By delaying training, behavioral patterns learned during puppyhood likely take longer to change.

Can you train an old dog?

Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks! Dogs can learn and be trained at any age. Older dogs have more self-control and are easier to train than young puppies. Continuing to train your dog as it matures is also important to help keep their mind sharp.

Is paying for private dog training worth it?

Private dog training helps correct your dog’s behavior, aggression, anxiety, socialization skills, and teaches them a commands list in a timely and cost-effective manner. Common commands dogs learn quickly are to stay, heel, and roll over.

Professional dog training is valuable because it teaches your dog not to jump or bite, to stop barking, to stay in the yard off-leash, potty training, to use a dog door, not to pull on a leash, hand signals, and much more.

Which dog breeds are easy to train?

The easiest dog breeds to train are an Australian Shepherd, Corgi, Bearded or Border Collie, Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and a Doberman Pinscher. Female canines of all breeds are also easier to train and housebreak.

Which dog breeds are hard to train?

The hardest dogs breeds to train are a Husky, Mastiff, Pug, Beagle, Bulldog, Weimaraner, Afghan Hound, Basenji, Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, Fox and Kerry Blue Terrier, Irish Setter, Pekingese, Pit Bull Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, and a Rottweiler.

Andie is an absolutely incredible trainer! I interviewed several people over the phone but she stood out above them all from the very beginning. She came incredibly prepared with a book of training guidelines for us to study. In addition, she brought treats, dog toys and gave us tips on the types of food that were best suited for our breed. She immediately identified certain attributes and of the breed that we were totally unaware of! Her knowledge helped us tremendously. She even introduced us to games for our dog to help with his high energy! She shared her training philosophy with us then went to work with our dog Dexter. Within about 20 minutes I was literally crying with tears of joy at his responsiveness to her techniques. It was a real turning point for us in our relationship with our dog! I can’t say enough good things about Andie! We will be continuing with her until we get all of his behaviors in a good place so that we can enjoy him to the fullest!

Stan and Maya are both excellent trainers. I was previously using a different company and as soon as I took my dog to Cosmic Canine, I could see a complete difference. I am extremely satisfied with the quality of work from this company. They have also gone out of their way numerous times to make sure that my dog and I have the best experience.

Khoi’s knowledge and experience is second to none. I have trained with K9 handlers and trainers from all over the world in the police, military, and private sector and have found that Khoi’s ability to read, diagnose, and train a dog is the best I have encountered. After 10 years as a police K9 handler and trainer, I still seek Khoi out for his training experience and guidance.

She’s very good at what she does as well as knowledgeable and patient. Explains steps to each process and time expectancy. Also very reasonably priced and she wore her mask. Definitely recommend because I will use her again.

JERRY PATILLO - TRAINER Jerry has worked as a trainer with several of my dogs for the past 10 years. . Angel, Frannye, Sunny and Poppy - all poodle mix girls. The most important thing I have learned from Jerry is that it’s most important for me to be trained and then the pups will follow along because I will know what to do. His methods are always kind - my dogs all love him. Further, they make sense - use high quality treats to bring out the best behavior. When I got my most recent girl - Poppy - I had to look to find Jerry because he was not where we had previously been in training. I could have gone with any trainer but I really wanted to have Jerry again because I continued to feel he was the best trainer for our family. I hope he is still training when I get my next little girl. Ann Nash Richardson Tx

My grand dog, Phoebe, was trained by Better Pups. She is a Catahoula breed. They are known for their very active and rambunctious behavior, especially the females. She learned the following: Sit Wait Place Leave it Down Walks perfectly on a leash ALL of theses commands were learned through PAIN FREE training!! I highly recommend Better Pups for all of your dogs behavior training.

I first met Beth when I was trying to understand my rescue dog's food aggression. We had consulted and attended classes of several trainers but the piece we were missing was understanding why this behavior was happening. Beth helped identify the issue right away and helped us create a home environment and manage our expectations of being in public with Ivy. This was like a light bulb moment for me that I am so appreciative for. Beth has always been instrumental in helping with our fear-based foster Brady. When we brought him into our home, he wouldn't leave his crate. He had been abused and was terrified of everything — people, sounds, movement. Beth coached us from day one and was ready to answer whenever I needed her. It was incredible watching Brady leave the crate and grow to a tail-wagging, playing, happy dog that loved to cuddle. At one point in his process, Brady began to develop some resource guarding with a couch and Beth knew how to address it immediately. Her advice transformed Brady's relationship with our other dogs and they all could coexist without any issues. We can't thank her enough and are so appreciative of all her hard work and advice. I 1000% recommend her services.
