Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Dog owners typically fill out a form on our website, wonderdogtraining.com, then chooses a time for a 30-minute call with a dog evaluator, then they do the call to see if we would be a good fit for each other. Then we set up the training schedule with their Dog Pro.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Our master dog trainer was certified in all 6 dog training certificates by Highlnad K-9, th best scholl in hte nation for operant conditioning (the science behind dog training), and all of our Dog Pro's are certified by us in basic household obedience training.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
We have on and off-leash programs, as well as dog and puppy programs, all of them are private, at-home training as we believe that board & train programs are riddled with problems and twice the cost....and the cheapo group classes at Petco are a total waste of time - neither of which can help you get rid of problem behaviors since the training doesn't take place in the dog's home, around those triggers, those doors, those counters, etc. All of our programs start at $97/mo using our Paypal Credit program.
How did you get started in this business?
See our website under About Us.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We have worked in trailer parks and in mansions and everything in between, and with every breed under the sun. We train about 300-400 dogs a year so we see a lot.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Please don't ship your dog off to a board and train facility to be trained. It could be dangerous, you won't learn anything about dog training, it won't fix your dog's problems (because the training doesn't take place around it's triggers so how could it?) and it's very expensive! What if you dog comes back knowing how to sit and stay, but has a broken spirit?
Also, please don't waste your money on group classes. They are super cheap but aren't effective, and again, can't fix the unwanted behaviors because the training doesn't take place at home. So many of these folks pay for group classes and then come to us to pay for priavte, in-home lessons too because the group classes didn't do what they hoped it would. That's just a watse of good money.
Lastly, please don't do positive-only training. It sounds great in theory, but there's a reason why 5% of our clients tried this, found it lacking, and came to us. You might be able to train a dog to sit with a treat, but it's hard to give it to him when he just took off after a squirrel and since the trainer has decided that no negative re-enforcement can be used, she'll have to wait to "catch him doing something right" to try to teach him to not run after those furry little crittters.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
What are the goals I have for my dog, like basic obedience, etc?
What are the problem behaviors I want trained out of my dog (bolting out the door, pooping in the house, eating off the counter, jumping on people, etc)?
How on earth is this trainer going to fix the problem behaviors if they aren't training the dog at my house, at my door, using my counter, using my backyard and carpet, etc?
