What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We like to discuss the proposed construction with a customer to determine that we are the right architect and designer to assist them with their project. We then break the design work into phases so that the client feels comfortable and assured that they are getting the result that they are hoping for at each step through the process.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Ross Cann, RA, AIA, LEED AP is fortunate to have been exceptually well educated to lead the design work of A4 Architecture and he holds advanced architectural history and design degrees from Yale, Cambridge and Columbia Universities. He has over 30 years of professional esperience in a wide variety of project type.

We tailor our pricing to each project's unique character and requirements. We typically charge for our services on a time and material basis up to a pre-set maximum, which is based on the proposed design scope of work.
How did you get started in this business?
Ross Cann began working in the architectural field during college and has devoted the last 30 years of his career to delivering project of the highest quality of design possible.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We work on a wide variety of projects including residential, commercial and institutional projects. Our projects include new construction, adaptive reuse, renovation and sustainable design.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of our recent projects, a new carriage house built as part of a residential compund in Newport, Rhode Isalnd, was selected for the cover feature article of the annual Newport Home magazine. It is gratifying to be able to share our work with a wider number of people and get broad recognition for both our clients and for our firm as well.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Your building, whether it is a home or a business, is one of your most important and valuable assets. Construction is by its nature a complex and expensive process. Hire the best architectu you can find to assist you through the design process to give you a building that will be beautiful, functional, energy efficient and more valuable when you eventually sell it. The money you spend on good design will be repaid to you many times over during your ownership (and ultimate sale) of the building.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Find an architect who is well educated and capable, one that listens to your concerns and does their best to work within the constraints of the project. Look for a person who is experienced and has been successful with similiar projects in the past so you can be comfortable that the process will go well. Lastly, choose someone you will enjoy working with as designing a building is a partnership between the client and the architect and a good relationship will generally result in a better final product.
