Emza's Chair Caning

Emza’s Chair Caning, founded in 2012 and based in Columbus, Ohio, provides chair caning and furniture weaving restoration by appointment from a home studio in the Clintonville neighborhood. The business is led by E. Emza Uphill, a fourth-generation furniture weaver with more than 25 years of experience. She began apprenticing at age 14 under her father at Bill’s Caning & Rushing and holds a BFA from The Ohio State University and an MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder.

The shop offers more than ten weaving techniques, including hand caning, sheet caning, French caning, rush, splint, cane binding, Danish cord, Danish peel, Shaker tape, hickory, and special projects. Work includes chairs, canoe panels, and other functional woven pieces.

Emza’s Chair Caning restores family heirlooms as well as mid-century and Danish Modern designs, with expertise in Hans Wegner and Niels Otto Møller chairs that require advanced traditional methods and custom, reverse-engineered patterns. Due to high demand and limited shop hours, work is accepted by appointment only. Prospective clients should provide clear photos of the woven panel—front and back—and the panel’s widest dimensions side-to-side and top-to-bottom to receive an estimate, availability, and timeline. In-person and phone estimates are not offered.
