Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Typically we meet with potential clients for a one hour "interview" - we meet them, they meet us, we walk their project and discuss their goals. Design is a very personal business - there must be a connection between designer and client or the process will not work. This initial meeting is at no charge, after which we will submit a written proposal outlining our fee and scope of service for each client within seven days.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am formally educated in both art history and interior design, and have worked in the design industry since 1988. I have decades of exposure to goods at all price points, which educates and informs my decisions as products are selected for client projects. I can pair something from Crate and Barrel with products from Baker - whatever is the best product for the client.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
As a firm, we pride ourselves on transparency. Once our proposal is submitted, there will be a very clear understanding of "how it all works." Typically, we work for a design fee and sell goods to our clients at "cost-plus."
How did you get started in this business?
I have always loved design, and have done it for almost 30 years - I actually cannot remember doing anything else!
What types of customers have you worked with?
Residential and commercial, newlyweds and empty-nesters, families and single professionals. Every project is different (and we love that!)
Describe a recent project you are fond of.
I had the joy of gutting a 13th floor condo overlooking downtown on Cleveland's Gold Coast. The unit has AMAZING views, so the interior had to be at the same level. Our client embraced the process. trusting us with color and wall paper choices we know she wasn't comfortable with at first. However, she had faith and her unit is now our (my) opus. We love every project but this one will always be special...
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
If, after meeting a potential designer - you are not inspired or excited - walk away. He or she is not the right "fit" for you. Keep interviewing till you find a designer that makes you excited about your project, one that will take your vision and help refine/define it.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
You MUST know your budget - please, do not ask any designer what he or she "thinks it might cost." Designers do the best they can with what they have but we must know - going in - how much you expect to spend.
