How did you get started in this business?
My name is Naaija Benjamin, I was born in Hoboken, New Jersey and Raised in various parts of NY. I was born on December 17th, that makes me a Sagittarius. My journey into the world of dog grooming started when a dog kennel opened up across the street from my high school Baldwin High. I started off as a volunteer cleaning kennels, and walking dogs, but my real interest was grooming, so eventually I worked my way up into the salon. Once there I watched the groomer very closely, this was a family owned and operated business so very often the groomer would get called out for family dealings so I took this advantage to show the groomer all I’ve been able to pick up from watching her, once she realized my talent she started really teaching me and from that moment I knew exactly what I wanted to do in life. I took what I learned and moved on to corporate grooming where I stayed for the next few years at which point I had built a pretty steady clientele so, I decided to start a mobile groom service for my clients that weren’t comfortable taking their fur baby to a corporate shop. I did this for quite some time until I got into a bad car accident where my car was totaled. Thankfully I was not severely hurt and walked away with just scratches and bruises but this did mean I no longer had a means to get to my appointments. I had to make the decision to go back to a shop till I got back on my feet. I ended up back at a corporate shop. I refused to let my dream of owning my own salon fail so I worked, saved, and networked and ended up meeting a investor who believed in me and my talent and I was finally able to open up my first salon Dom’s Puppy Parlor(Dom is my Shihpoo who I love to death) This was a very exciting time in my life for me however the excitement was short lived because just a few months after, Covid hit and the world stopped. My salon being so new and us still working on getting everything going we just couldn’t survive such a financial hit. At this point I had hit my personal ultimate low, my business had failed, I was homeless, my job was closed due to Covid and at this point I had nothing so, I decided to leave NY and go to CT where my mom and siblings live. This turned out being the best decision I made in awhile. I got the chance to re-build myself and confidence up and had a chance to just rest.I finally decided it was time to get back to work and was planning to go back into corporate grooming but the universe had other plans for me.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have been in this field for a very long time so at this point I don't think there is a client type that I haven't worked with. However I specialize with dealing with anxious, nervous clients and pet owners. It makes me proud that I can help a group that is so easily shunned by a lot of pet services professionals. I love hearing "wow you're amazing he/she seems so comfortable with you" when a client comes in expecting the worst of their pet.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A client had a bad experience and was weary of having me groom her dog, I was able to wow the owner on all fronts and I'm excited to have a new forever client :)
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
In this field, a groomers energy is very important in how strenuous the groom service will be on a pet. Always get to know your groomer and pay attention to his or her's energy. It'll make a big difference in your pets overall experience.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
What do I expect from the groomer ?
what services do I think my pet needs ?
Is my dog well maintained or should I be expecting matting charges ?
Does my pet have any health conditions that could make grooming more stressful on pet ?(heart, breathing, seizures etc)
