Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My clients tend to be people who want a slow moving, everchanging project that they can control. Therefore, communication skills are paramount. I work alone and bring in others when required, plumbers and electricians mostly. I have spent the last seven years working almost exclusively for architects- working on their homes. I work Time & Materials exclusively. I am not interested in competing, or bidding, on work.
I am insured with a three million liability policy and furnish certificates of insurance on request.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BFA, with honors, from The School of Visual Arts in 1985.
Carpenter thereafter. Progressed to supervisor , project manager- ultimately starting a business, Cobalt Renovations Inc, in 1998. Business closed in 2010. Have worked independently since then.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
If materials must be purchased prior to commencement of the work- then I ask for a deposit to cover that cost.
I bill for my services by the hour and present an invoice at the end of the week (generally for a 40 work week.), or the project. Material costs are included, as well as the receipts.
How did you get started in this business?
My background is an artist- I went to The High School of Art & Design, prior to college at SVA. So, I am known for being an artist, creative, non standard artisan. My sense of color, form and structure is encyclopedic.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I tend to work for architects, their clients and affluent clients who mostly live in residential buildings.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Never hire anyone who cannot furnish you with a Certificate of Insurance.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Am I a good match with this person? Do they understand what I want to see?
