Independent Design has been providing Architectural Drafting Services for over 15 years. Rebecca is a licensed architect and can stamp projects for local building officials and permits. We are proud of our ability to work quickly and provide high-quality professional services.
Our team specializes in a diverse spectrum of projects including architectural design and drafting for renovating and adding to historic commercial and residential buildings, new construction, and accessibility design interventions for aging in place, ramps, elevators, lifts, and handicap access. We work closely with our clients to identify their unique needs and collaborate to resolve creative challenges. Every project is an opportunity to forge a strong relationship with our clients, listen, and focus on making their lives better through excellent design. We really enjoy solving complex spatial problems and pride ourselves on providing three-dimensional computer models that help explain how the space will actually feel.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We offer a free intake phone call, and then develop a customized proposal for your project work and email it to you. When you accept the terms, we schedule a first meeting to begin work.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Rebecca McWilliams is a licensed architect and has 15 years of residential design experience in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. James Meinecke is a LEED Accredited Professional and focuses on sustainable design, historic preservation, and high end kitchens and baths. James and Rebecca met while studying Architecture at Roger Williams University in 2001.

We create a custom quote for each customer based on their specific project needs.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We enjoy working with residential remodels and new homes, renovations for accessibility and aging in place, and both remodels and new commercial buildings.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Am I looking for someone to help me design a better space to live and work - or just someone to build it? We are often asked if we install or perform construction work. We are glad to partner with and assist the client in selecting a contractor, but our expertise is truly in performing excellent design services. Understand that design makes a functional, memorable space, turns a house into a home; and helps increase employee and customer satisfaction.
Consider your project budget. Typically we tell clients to expect to pay between 8-12% of the construction budget for design services.
