Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
In working with a new client I first meet with them to learn of their needs and life style. Next I draw preliminary floor palns to review with my clinet and make changes. Once the floor plans are finalized we move to the exterior appearance and draw the exterior. Again, reviewed by the client and changed to the final design. the final step is to create construction drawings consisting of floor plans, exterior elevations, site plan if necessary, a section drawing through the house to show all construction materials, structural details and foundation plan. The drawings are then ready for bidding out to builders and obtaining a building permit.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master Degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan, taken and passed the three days of exams to become a Registered Architect. I have been in the practice of architecture since 1974 with work in both comemrcial and residential markets.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
My fees are based on hourly rates to help save my clients money. If I were to charge a percent of construction cost or a fixed fee, I would be charging more than my hourly rates and, therefore, costing my clients more.
How did you get started in this business?
I was taking architectural drafting classes and realized I loved architecture, but didn't want to be on a computer all day drawings what somebody else designed. I took the steps to be accepted into the School of Architecture at the University of Michigan and complete their six year Masters of Architecture program.
What types of customers have you worked with?
My clients range from young first home owners to retired couples wanting an accessible home for them to live in for the rest of their lives. I have clients who wanted second homes, cottages and remodeling or additions. My clients have also been in need of help with the DEQ on Critical Dune and High Erosion areas. I help my clients in any want they need help.
Describe a recent project you are fond of.
Recently I provided and addition to a home for a young couple as they were having a baby and needed more space. Prior to this I designed "the cutest garage in town" (their description) for a couple in Grand Haven. I worked on a home that had three additions, we added two more and designed the home so you couldn't tell it had any additions. A recent challenge was a 5,700 square foot home on Lake Michigan with a veneer stone exterior and 12' high ceilings. I love working on all types, styles and designs of architecture.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
If you are looking to hire an architect I would look for someone you feel comfortable with and who has your interests in mind. Look for an architect who also keeps your budget at the top of their priorities as it is very easy to design a home that will be too expensive for your budget.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
People thinking of hiring an architect should think about; 1. what is your budget, 2. what design style do you like, 3. How do you use the spaces in your current house or apartment and how would you change the way you use these spaces, 4. what is missing from your current house or apartment, 5. lot contours, do you want a walk out needing a sloping lot or do you want a flat lot with no walk out, 6. finally think of any special furniture pieces you treasure and how you wish to utilize them in your new home or addition.
