About
Manhattan Restorations, founded in 1988 and based in Easthampton, MA, specializes in the authentic restoration and conservation of fine antiques and historical furnishings. The studio preserves original finishes and patina using conservation methods and period-appropriate materials, including woods up to 300 years old. Services include complete restoration and conservation, structural and cosmetic repairs, upholstery, frames, leather top installations, wood turnings, marble restoration, hand-rubbed shellac, varnish and oil finishes, Oriental and European lacquers, polishing, gilding, caning, veneering, and remediation for fire, water, and mold damage. The team also handles insurance claims, offers sales of select pieces, and operates a Restoration & Conservation School.
Manhattan Restorations is experienced in removing later urethane and lacquer coatings that were improperly applied, restoring a piece’s integrity while retaining its value. Notable work includes a 2009 commission from The Billy Joel Organization to conserve and restore multiple furnishings, highlighted by a complete restoration of an 1880s walnut and mahogany bar completed at the Easthampton facility. Clients engage Manhattan Restorations for workmanship grounded in fine woodworking techniques and established conservation practices aimed at extending the life and usefulness of heirloom furniture.
