What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Initial phone conversation to get a feel for what services prospective clients are looking to secure. Next, a Design Consultation in the home or office for a more in-depth look, show them the "What's your Style?" booklet on styles of rooms, the color wheel, furniture construction, and their personality. Talk about wish list, lifestyle and budget for the project. At that time measure rooms to be redesigned and take photos.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Psychology courses in college beneficial when working with many different personalities, a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, a minor in English. In any business knowing how to work with people young or older creates understanding. Running a classroom teaches you to be prepared and organized. These skills served me well in running my own business, Classic Design, since 2000.
I sat through a 10 hour comprehensive design exam that included designing a whole house floor plan, a commericial space, an electrical overlay and an elevation of a 15' wall. It Written portion of the exam included knowledge of furniture styles, archectural styles, furniture makers, art history and calculating yardage for fabric, wallcovering and carpet.
Passing the test gave me the designation of Professional Member of the Interior Design Society. I became president of the New England Chapter. IDS membership includes several hours each year of continuing education courses to maintain IDS status.
