About

After 40 years in the industry, I take the time to listen and consider the long-term goals of the project to protect not only the client's investment but mine as well.

HomeGuide has no fee to use for the consumer seeking professional services and states "Get a free estimate" without mentioning that it charges the service provider who contacts the inquiry. While there are service providers that can quickly and easily give that free estimate over the phone or in an e-mail.

There are some service providers unable to do that because each project is different such as Landscaping that encompasses so many aspects ranging from Arbors to Xeriscaping. To correctly give such an estimate the project site must be looked at, measured for each aspect of that project, logistics of materials in and out of worksite, mobilization of equipment and labor, etc.

It actually costs a contractor such as myself often at times a lot more than just time .... especially if that "Free Estimate" has no return on it. To be very honest just like the saying goes, "there is nothing free and someone has to pay sooner or later" thus making it an investment by the service provider before even meeting the potential client for the first time.

Please look over HomeGuide breakdowns of both National and Local average costs for the consumer to review and consider while remembering "You get what You paid for".

If I can not utilize the best possible and correct steps required the first time. then I do not do the project. I am most often not the lowest cost firm but will gladly explain why. However, in the long term, it is actually the most effective and monetarily saving.

I always (if asked) offer other solutions for possible cost savings. We merely do not need the practice and it is much too hard to take on a project not to start with respect and trust and ask only the same in return.

I truly enjoy going beyond the clients expectations by always doing it right the 1st time for the best long term sustainability of the overall project. If a person doesn't like the house it can be remodeled, added on to or color changed. To design and install a living, breathing, and the forever-changing project isn't easy so it has to be done right the first time.

The initial consult on-site for around 90 minutes is $50.00 cash. Hand drawn to scale (+ or - 1ft), project layout details, materials list, Design, and Estimating is $90 hourly charged at $22.50 for 15-minute quarters with a not-to-exceed time frame set depending on the project and\or scope-of-work. You are hiring me to put together the most cost-effective, best materials and products available to ensure the long-term survivability of your Landscape ... the first and last view of your home that people see ... so do you just want it done or do you want it done right?
When I was a little guy, Moa would scold me for playing in the dirt, tearing the yard up with my Tonka toys. She would send me to Granny's, and I'd be tasked with weeding the flower beds. Granny and her sisters, from an early pioneer family farming roots to SW Oregon, were local Horticulturists, and, well, it wasn't long before I pulled the wrong plant.... so I started learning plants! Grandad's family roots in SW Oregon/NW California date to 1848 prospecting for Gold in the water. He became a noted historian on the Chinese and gold mining in the region. From him, I started learning early geology and working with the water. I grew up in Agriculture. I had a stepfather who turned from timber falling to teaching himself how to operate a cable tool drill to construct a well on an Indian reservation at Happy Camp on the Klamath River, so I also grew up water well drilling and pumps. Then I was given a gift from Heaven above to see things ... and now I still play in the dirt, but with real Tonka machines creating beautiful ecosystems for everyone to enjoy.
The clients I take on are of the human type who care about the ecosystem around them. I've had clients from a few U.S. government agencies (HUD, Bureau of Reclamation, Dept of Agriculture, FAA) to a heir of a Ketchup dynasty while her husband was the Democratic candidate for our nation's presidency, a few A-list movie actors, and 1 actress, a former CEO who bankrupted Wall Street's oldest firm, a golf legend who designed a course on the southern Oregon coast along with 5 other couse installs -2 in Oregon and 3 in Texas, a computer builder at his campus and residence, a Resort being built in Idaho, the Idaho Botanical Garden and many, many private residential owners in 5 different states ... just to mention a few projects. But I treat each and every one, no matter who they are, all the same. There is no" type."

Have a notebook and a good pen to take notes ready before any contractor shows up. Write everything down for clear communication. If possible, get the vehicle license plate number off the vehicle they show up in. Heck, even I'm running around in an old Ford Escape with fuel prices the way they are. If I showed up in the F-350 service truck, I'd have to charge more. The first thing to ask is to be shown their Idaho Contractor Registration card, which they are supposed to have on them. 2nd question to ask is if they have a current and required Insurance Liability Policy in place, and which insurance company has that. If the project is going to take longer than a day, they can get that certificate emailed to them to show you. 3rd is, you can look up the Idaho contractor board to search their name and see if they are current, how long they have been in business, etc. If they claim that they are "Licensed," this is fraudulent if they say yes. There is no Idaho State License for landscaping or irrigation....only a Contractor Registration Number issued. They may not know the difference, but they should. There is no Contractor's Bond" required in Idaho. Also, unless they can provide proof shown to you that they have passed the course study, training, and testing for the Cross-Connection Control Program (Backflow), it is illegal for them to disassemble the Backflow assembly. And go with your instincts.
What is the long-term goal the client is hoping for? The water availability is not only changing drastically here in SW Idaho, but most, if not all, of the western United States. People need to keep a designated notebook regarding their landscape and landscape watering. Landscape and irrigation are one of the hardest, most complicated, labor-intensive contracting trades there is. Why is that, you ask? No 2 projects are the same, similar, yes, but not the same. It also seems that the client base all think they know how to do it, and what should be done and when. The funny thing is, one does not see many of them out there providing the labor that is needed, or how long it is going to take ... but yes, they could be out in the hot sun working on their own landscape, but only a few put in the effort. Yes, it can be expensive to do it right, and one gets what they pay for. If money is well spent with a true, honest landscape professional, in the end, it will be cheaper for the client. A true landscape professional wants and needs the client to be happy, and you know what? They create it to walk away, and can't see your yard from where they live. So write down your thoughts to discuss with the landscapers you are interviewing, and remember ... we don't pretend to know how to do what you do to make your living.
